Apple CarPlay

What's the score? Is it now on the rs6?

It definitely is on the new a4.

Just wondering.

Bin the crApple device. Why do you need carplay in an RS6 anyway?

CarPlay is pretty nice. I have an aftermarket one in my 996 and it's very user friendly.

As an Apple user/owner of 15yrs, who's spent some time with CarPlay in the new Q7, I really wouldn't bother even if it were available.

CarPlay is just an overlay onto the existing MMI, it's not part of the UI. The app choice is very restricted and apple have no schedule of supported apps. I use Soundcloud for my music, and that's not supported, nor are a host of other apps due to CarPlay only legally supporting sound and or official Apple Siri controlled/based apps rather than full interactive. For the majority of things CarPlay does you have to use Siri, which on CarPlay is laggy and very infuriating. CarPlay works best with touch screens, which Audis aren't, so you end up having to use the jog wheel which is a cumbersome process for simple app scrolling.

What I find utterly galling is VW charge £100 for the functionality, whilst Audi ask you to stump up £350 for exactly the same thing.

Facelift RS6s have MIB2 infotainment units as appear in the new Q7 but Audi pretty much carried the old A6 MMI software across for the facelift, so we see very little of the full range of MIB2 features, despite having the underlying hardware. When Audi launched MIB2, they stated that a big benefit would be the ability to upgrade cars in the field with new functions; however, I doubt that will happen in my lifetime seeing as Audi cannot even manage expired traffic information licence renewals for existing A6 owners.

So, the full answer is: If you have a facelift then you might see CarPlay (and Android equivalent) one day, if you hang onto your car long enough. If your car is pre-facelift then forget it.

I have spent some time using Carplay on MIB2 with touchscreen and I was pretty impressed, given all the caveats mentioned by KMpowell about being Apple-only apps. I agree that it would probably make for a poor experience on an Audi device without the touchscreen.

Wow, some really superb responses. Thanks chaps!!

I whacked a pioneer double din apple unit into the golf a year or so ago, and it's good for what it does, also very convenient for people not familiar with mmi.

I was hoping the fl would do all the cool a3 and a4 things, now I'm getting worried it doesn't even do the basics. For example the mmi connect app on the rs4 is nice but very limited, also there is an iwatch app which gives me a nice pic of the rs4 but no cool watch to Audi functions.

The inner geek would love to flash ones lights from ones watch

I have no desire or need for this. I'm a gadget geek but the built in MMI does what I want so well that I don't have to start looking for aftermarket alternatives. It has full postcode sat nav with google maps and street view etc and most importantly it plays FLACs so I can have my entire music collection on a hard drive in the car and control it all from the steering wheel controls.

I agree the current MMI is reasonably good. It's only weak point is its inability to allow quick access to music across a large media library. MIB2 adds much better voice control features that mean you can say "Play album Dark Side of the Moon" or "Play track Layla", etc., which is brilliant.

Also, you can browse artists, albums, tracks and playlists in the driver display, where our current cars only show a long, unbroken list of tracks (with no other information) - this being a bizarre retrograde step on the facelift cars: the pre-FL cars allowed you more browsing functions in the driver display than the current cars.

You can, but it's not intuitive and it is a bit buggy. I'd not look aftermarket because of the loss of integration, but the MMI is starting to show its age a bit now.

I don't like browsing my artist or album as I have too many albums for this to be of any use especially when there are a few compilation albums in there (approx. 60 artists for 1 3 disc album). I like to browse a folder structure so for me it's perfect.

The mmi on the rs6 is a whole heap better than on the b8, which is my main car gripe, especially the phone.

I was just hoping that as the brain can handle it, they update with all the cool stuff the a3 and a4 do.
