Engine carbon clean honest review

Post by andyg72 » Sun Oct 25, 2015 9:03 pm

Well today I was at donnington park with Audi tuner magazine got talking to some great guys and some one mentioned about the massively covered carbon clean some of you may know I'm fairly new to the RS4 and a carbon clean to me is a big bill to pick up .
So I'm told today there's some guys doing carbon cleans here today so I went to take a look and have a chat .

I've heard all the bad reports on terra cleaning and assumed this was the same but it's not far from it in the way of the ingredients and the way it's given to the car .

So for a discounted price of £80 from £99 i guessed with out trying is never know so in for a pound well £80 I asked the lads to do it for me .

After 30-45 mins the car was done so here's my opinion.

My car has 63k on clock wasn't sluggish at all and pulls well 5k rpm to red so I wasn't looking for massive gains or expecting them .
The drive home from donnington was good I noticed better high end power but more so mid range and smoother drive .

Defo worth the money and I would say if your car has worse build up than mine you will love this :)

I'll have this done once a year to keep in good shape .
:)

Engine carbon clean honest review

Post by Rw@@dy » Sun Oct 25, 2015 9:40 pm

I had mine done first thing this morning by them. I've got 78k on mine and never had a clean before. I noticed the top end had more pull than previous and there is way less crap coming out the back which had been worse since having the pre cats fitted.

You can see in the first pic the carbon on the floor

Your car looked wicked by the way!

I also had a clean by Cuppa too a month or 2 ago.

I noticed a definite improvement in smoothness of the engine both at idle and when driving.
I also had a little hunting of the revs when coming to a stop and dropping the clutch. I’ve have this before after fitting my Revolution air intake the 1st time around a few years ago and put it down to damaging the MAF during the changeover. A while later the MAF failed completely and I swapped it for a new one. After doing some work in the engine bay a couple of months ago (which involved removal of the air intake) I found the hunting returned so prepared myself for a new MAF. However, after the clean I’ve found that the hunting has almost completely gone and only happens very occasionally now. Cuppa stated that if he had known this he could have spent a few minutes with a targeted clean of the MAF (remember that the clean is normally carried out at the intake after the MAF).

Before the clean I carried out a log of the MAF reading. I recorded around 325g/s which is in line with my previous rolling road readings of around 400bhp (using the 80% rule 325g/s = approx. 406bhp).
Post clean and with similar (or worse) intake and ambient temperatures I recorded the about the same on the 1st go, but on the 2nd attempt I recorded around 345g/s. This is repeatable. Unfortunately, I only carried out 1 test run pre clean so cannot say 100% that it made a difference to the figures. I intend on doing another clean in about a year once it is gunked up again but this time with more pre-clean runs (it was a bit of a rush to get it done after both of use being on holiday).

I’ve always been an advocate of carbon cleaning being a waste of time and money, but for the price, and more importantly for me, the convenience of having it done at home meant that it was a no brainer. I’d happily pay the money once a year with no effort on my part as an ongoing cost. Cuppa came to my house in the evening after work so I didn’t have to take the day off to drop the car off then pick it up a few days later. To me, the cost and inconvenience of a conventional carbon clean, and how short a time it lasts for just make it a no go for me, even if it did do a better job a cleaning.

Good to hear another member having this done, interesting readings coming back too. I was mostly interested in it as my car has always struggled with emissions during the mot. Ideally if I can, I want to go back to the garage I used for my mot and get them to check what readings the emissions are now vs a few weeks ago

One of the main reasons I trusted his opinion and to work on my car was that I had met him a couple of times before at AITP and had seen his car.

There are other franchisees all over the country (and getting established overseas too) so there is one in Essex for you.
