Xenon out, dash fault and VCDS error code
Xenon out, dash fault and VCDS error code
SO today my drivers side xenon failed. I hot a dash warning about dipped beam, checked and the bulb was out.
I have the following two VCDS faults and assume this relates to the left fault (02233)but this would mean left is when looking at the car head on rather than from inside the car. The other side does not seem to have any bulbs out, etc so confused why I have a fault code on both sides.

The 02233 fault was present previously a few months ago after a service and both DRL's where not working. I took the car back and they resolved the issue, but I'm not sure of the cause. I assumed one of the plugs hadn't been connected properly or was knocked when the removed trim to do the spark plugs, etc but the xenon bulb was definitely not out.
Wondering what the more likely cause is. Bulb, ballast, wiring, other.
Has anyone changed the xenon bulbs and is it a bumper of job?
Ross Tech wiki suggests the following:
02233:
Possible Causes
Fuse(s) faulty
Wiring from/to Left Headlight Power Output Stage (J667) faulty
Left Headlight Power Output Stage (J667) faulty/incompatible
Possible Solutions
Check Fuse(s)
Check/Repair Wiring from/to Left Headlight Power Output Stage (J667)
Check/Replace Left Headlight Power Output Stage (J667)
Check Left Headlight Power Output Stage (J667) Part Number/Compatibility
and
00997:
Possible Symptoms
Malfunction Indicator Lamp (MIL) active
Possible Causes
Lamp for Low Beam; Right (M31) faulty
Wiring/Connector(s) from/to Lamp for Low Beam; Right (M31) faulty
Control Module incorrectly coded
Possible Solutions
Check Lamp for Low Beam; Right (M31)
Check Wiring/Connector(s) from/to Lamp for Low Beam; Right (M31)
Check Control Module Coding
So could basically be anything. Is there a suitable way of checking and eliminating each potential cause?

Re: Xenon out, dash fault and VCDS error code
Probably worth mentioning that they are adaptive lights, that had been fully functioning. Hence do full up, down, left, right sweep on start up.
Re: Xenon out, dash fault and VCDS error code
I've had the 02233 - Left Headlight Power Output Stage (J667) for a while now, this weekend i got round to swapping the ballasts over to see if that was the problem and the code had moved from the left to the right (with the ballast).
I did take the bumper off to do it, not sure if it can be done without but i had other jobs that i wanted to do at the same time so took it off, its worth a try to find the fault

Re: Xenon out, dash fault and VCDS error code
Cheers Jotter. Did you have a bulb out too? Have you sourced a new ballast yet or are you getting one from the dealer?
Re: Xenon out, dash fault and VCDS error code
I didn't have anything wrong with my bulb, might just be a big coincidence for you. Yeah got another one on the way so will let you know if it fixes it
Re: Xenon out, dash fault and VCDS error code
Cheers mate. Maybe it is the other code after all then for me. Also thought maybe the cold weather has brought it on. I hope it's the bulb, but looking at it, you need to get the whole flipping air box out to get to the cover. Which also looks like it's screwed in and the head appears rounded.
Re: Xenon out, dash fault and VCDS error code
OK, so I cleared the fault codes, and re scanned. Only the Address 55: Xenon Range 02233 - Left Headlight Power Output Stage (J667) fault code came back up. However after a drive and a re-scan the codes are back (same two as before) plus an alarm code 00962 - Alarm via. Tilt Sensor. This was present when I scanned yesterday when the dipped beam warning displayed when the xenon was out, I ruled that out as assumed I had triggered the alarm at some point previously and hence the code was still present, but as it returned today and the alarm has not been triggered I figured there was more to it.
Having read through the attached thread: viewtopic.php?t=101485 I called Allpartssouthwest.com to get a price for ballasts, etc. They were very helpful but couldn't recognise the Bosch part numbers as Bosch no longer make these items. When I mentioned the 00979 fault code on the left hand side (which they confirmed to be N/S (passenger)) and sent them a google image of the part number, they advised it was a central electrics ECU. Which lead me the above questioning over the alarm code.
I have no idea where this part is located or how to test if it is faulty. If anyone else knows, please shout. (Part: 8E0 907 279 L On board supply control unit)
I suppose the order of elimination process is as follows:
1) Fuse (Does anyone know which one this is, or have a fuse box diagram (prepared to be told it's in the handbook, so will have a look there too)
2) D1S bulb / igniter (How on earth do you get these things out? Do you have to remove the bumper, or airbox, etc?)
3) Ballast (gain, headlight out, I suppose)
4) Consider the comfort module impact further?
My head hurts with all of this
I've re pasted the fault codes (all of them this time), including the part descriptions in case anyone can help:

Re: Xenon out, dash fault and VCDS error code
Bumper off job and swap ballast around see if fault moves bulbs are easy but the lights need to come out I'm afraid.

Re: Xenon out, dash fault and VCDS error code
Cheers buddy.
How easy is it to get the bumper off? Assume front wheels off and on axle stands to get to any bolts in the wheel liners? Not exactly looking forward to it, Iol
Also is it advisable to disconnect the battery?
Also is it advisable to disconnect the battery?
Re: Xenon out, dash fault and VCDS error code
No need to remove wheel as you don't need to remove the bumper as such just move it forward so the headlights clear the bumper. You need a good set of long torx screw drivers. Very long 10 mm socket (exstenstion).
If you need more advise let me know Ishould be able to dig up some links to How To.

Re: Xenon out, dash fault and VCDS error code
Cheers mate. I called them up, they were very helpful. Can't really confirm the right ballasts though as yet. But I think I'm probably on the right lines with the process of elimination.
