"grating of steering"

Post by qwick69 » Tue Jan 20, 2015 9:01 am

I have noticed that when I put full, or nearly full lock on the RS and drive off, I get a "grating" sound and it feels as though I am running over gravel. Is this normal? Has anyone else experienced this? It mainly happens when the car is cold.

I think you may be experiencing the same as an R8 and my C5 RS6: viewtopic.php?f=38&t=113409

It was -3 here and had a weird grating sound as i was pulling out of my road. It stopped pretty quick but not sure what it was.

I get this in both my Porsche and also Abarth 500 - most noticable when the (summer) tyres are cold. I think it is just a function of wide tyres on a tight steering lock.

Ah, that sounds plausible. Good thinking.

Yes i believe this is correct, it always happens on our cayman, i used to think there was a problem but it is just due to the point made above. ^^^^^

OK Guys Thanks, seems 4 wheel drive has something to do with it also, as all 4 wheels are not alined at very low speeds according to Audi UK.
So it is not broken then, :jump_clap:

Tends to happen most when tyres are cold and with a damp surface. The noise is the rubber losing traction on the outer front wheel relative to the turn
