50 m Sat Nav

Post by dog » Sun Apr 13, 2003 10:16 am

Someone posted on the RS4.org site about a sofware upgrade that gives you 50 m resolution and options of different routes.
Well it is true! My wife's newly installed genuine sat nav does just that! I will be on the phone tomorrow to get mine upgraded to it too!

There's a step-by-step guide to upgrading the software (including a downloadable Nero image file) at this page. Please read this page carefully, as this is obviously a potentially risky operation. Do however, have a good look round this guy's site as he's got some great ideas on there like a boot-mounted PC with wireless keyboard, wireless LAN and a TV-out that uses the Nav+ display and runs an MP3 library.

I think the previous maximum resolution was 100m / 0.1 miles and is now 50m or 0.05 miles. The software upgrade may also (depending upon your previous version) add none, some or all of the following;
  • The compass display.
  • Some enhanced GPS coordinate displays and volume control.
  • The speller function that greys out letters not possible.
  • The ability to enter an intermediate destination.
  • A bug fix for a volume problem with the TV tuner where it was much louder than the radio

I also seem to think that the display colours have changed slightly between Nav+ in the S8 and the RS 6, but I don't know if the software version changes this or the data CD. I suspect the RS 6 may have a newer version than the one on the site above, but I don't think it's available for download anywhere.

i,ve just done this upgrade following the instructions in the link.
It went pretty much as detailed there except that to get it started you have to wait until the cd is ejected and then reinsert it. At the end the cd was ejected and then taken back in immediately and the system language switched into german which then had to be changed back to english.
Apart from that the funtionallity is definately better and the system generally seems to respond faster. A worthwhile mod and not too terrifying!

Can someone help me out with this TMC thing. When I was driving in Switzerland last year I noticed that the SatNav said that TMC was active and was receiving info from a number of radio stations. I've got the standard SatNav (2001) and haven't done any software updates. Is it not the case that it's a matter for UK radio stations to start broadcasting info or is there something deeper!

C5 RS6 MTM Stage 1- Gone, missed, but not as much as the RS4

C7 A6 Allroad BiTDI MTM (380hp, 575 ft lb, YES 575 ft lb!) - Current family wagon: 0-60 in 4.9 sec and nearly 50 mpg at a steady motorway chug. That's having your cake and eating it!

The latest is that Audi is about to release an official version of the software upgrade within a month or two. They recon that 1 in 5 private setups ruins the sat nav for good.
