strange fault with audio!!

Post by rocket1 » Tue Jun 18, 2013 7:15 pm

hi all,
i have a b7 rs4 and it has the rns-e dvd sat nav head unit. i,ve noticed that with ignition off and head unit off i can hear a faint hissing from all speakers. also noticed a few weeks ago when i pulled head unit out to plug in audi ipod interface that the cooling fan was running on the back of the head unit again with keys out and unit turned off. it was doing it before the ipod was connected so its not that.
i can,t see this as normal so can anyone shed any light or ideas on it.
thanks guys!

iirc there was an update to the rns-e firmware to solve the shutting down problem.
the rns-e should run for about 30 minutes (or so) after ignition off anyway though.

The hissing is not the RNS-E, it's the Bose amplifier. When you unlock the doors the Bose amp automatically turns on, hence the hissing noise. It will stay on for about half hour or 30 seconds after you lock the doors. I know cos I use the same signal wire that normally turns the Bose on as the remote wire for my processor so as soon as I unlock the doors my processor faceplate lights up. Try it out; sit in the car and listen for the hissing. Use the keyfob to lock the doors, 30 secs later it should stop.

quick thing to test - go to the rns-e and check the settings/info menu. it should give a version number of the firmware on the unit.
You're looking for 550 or 650 iirc.

Unlike conevential car amplifiers whuch turn on with the headunit, the Bose one comes on whenever there is a supply to the RNS-E even if the RNS-E itself is off, hence the hiss.

Not quite true - the Bose amp is on only whenever the RNS-E is on, BUT the RNS-E has an "on but snoozing" state when it appears to be off but is actually on.

The RNS-E (and hence the Bose amp) turns on when the car is unlocked and stays on until either the car is locked or 30 minutes after the ignition is turned off. Pressing and holding the power button on the RNS-E doesn't actually turn it off - it just puts it into the "on but snoozing" state.
