You'll need an oil that is a Synthetic 5w-30 and VW 504 00 / 507 00 type approved.
I decided to go with what the engine had filled from the factory which is a Fuchs oil and purchased from Opie Oils, they also have a discount code for RS246 members giving 10% off your order total, by entering RS246 into the voucher part.

I think 5w30 is the recommended spec and what everybody uses. The handbook gives spec rather than viscosity I think, but I'm pretty sire it's 5w30. Make sure you use a good quality oil though, something like Catrol Edge
Edit: sam beat me to it.

Correct, meeting the VW 504/507 spec is what matters.MikeFish wrote:The handbook gives spec rather than viscosity I think.

I have been using Titan Fuchs pro s for the last couple of years(previously used castrol edge) found that to be a great drop of jollop and have found I don't need to top up as regular as I used too...

I wonder why spec is 5W30 in europe and 5W40 (or 0W40) in the States?
ours is 502 00
ours is 502 00

Yes Castrol Edge will do fine - its probably the most popular brand. I've always used it as it's easy to come by and places like Amazon and ASDA (buy online, collect in store) have good prices.
