Ceramic's pads

Post by jonicox » Wed Apr 24, 2013 11:09 pm

Hi,

Is there an accepted opinion on whether I need to be more careful in changing the pads for my ceramic brakes, in terms of time line? Last MoT suggested 3-4000 miles until they need replacing and I am wondering if I should just wait for the light to come on. Also, am I likely to ever need to replace the disks from general wear?

Thanks

Thought you were hunting - what have you bought?

Ceramic disks have to be changed at the same time as pads. Dealers charge a fortune for disposal (high asbestos and mercury content apparently) but I happen to be passing your way and will happily take them for secure destruction

Dom81 you are most generous!

I have found my target for acquisition, just fretting over a few details, but will reveal all soon hopefully

Id love to know the average mileage you should expect out of a set of ceramic pads and how much they are to replace. Ive heard they are about £500 just for pads.

I got 60k out of mine and wouldn’t say I drive too slowly; I’ve warped 2 sets of steel rears in that time. IIRC they were about £400~£500 including fitting and VAT, my local dealer gives me good discount on parts and labour through the workshop. Hope this helps

No worries fella and on a side note I wouldn't wait until the light comes on just in case it doesn't!!!!

My dealer thought I had about 5k left in them before the light would normally come on but the risk of damage was too great for the sake of another 5k of mileage. When in doubt get 'em changed
