Private plates query

[Big Aln RS6]

Recently fitted my plate back onto my RS6 and a colleague at work asked a question about transfers that I'd once pondered.

He has a car that's original designated number is 6 digits for example A12 ABC. His query is that could he transfer this number to another vehicle???

I pondered this some years ago when I had imported my 1st Golf G60 from Holland and spotted a clapped out Rover with a G60 plate on it. I was intent on buying the Rover with the view to scrapping it and trandferring the plate. A friend of mine that is a cop said it wasn't possible but I never did look into it properly.

Anyone here have any experience or knowledge of what's allowed regarding original registration numbers?

The car with the plate on need's to have a valid MOT certificate before you can transfer the plate away from the car.

I don't get this buying a plate that has the car model on it? What's the point? After all the manufacture always put's a little badge on the arse for you. OK, I'll stop before I go in to rant mode.

Definitely not an expert on this, but assuming you were looking at buying the old Rover ( G60 *** ) and then transferring it's VRM to your Golf G60, I'd guess that there wouldn't be an issue. I would think that once purchased, the VRM belonging to your Rover is yours to do what you want with ( so long as it satisfies age-related criteria ..ie,not making the recipient vehicle look newer for example, and has a valid MOT). Assuming the G60 was something like an '89/'90/ ??, perhaps the Rovers' G60 plate would've made the Golf appear newer than it was ??
There might also be other restrictions as the Golf was an import, but I've put a cherished number on an imported car many years ago without issue (although this was dateless).

Yeah I know the car needs a MOT. I think you've misunderstood what I was getting at.

I've messed about with it a few times making it smaller and smaller but for some reason it isn't transferring to the page that way.

Yes Rossi, that's exactly what I mean. I've imported a few cars over the years and had a private plate on them all so I know that's not an issue.

It was mainly that said car when registered was given it's reg number, and it reads something so my colleague wants to be able to retain it.

I guess I could always pop past the DVLA office as it's local and usually not very busy.
