Door Handle Problems

Post by ChrisRS6 » Thu Nov 15, 2012 1:25 pm

I've done some searches on here, and found threads about the micro-switches failing in door handles, which appears to confuse the car into thinking that the door isn't shut / open when it actually is.

I think I have a slightly different problem though.

On a few recent occasions, I have tried the driver's door handle and nothing happens. Yes - I've unlocked the car first with the key-fob, but when I pull the handle - nothing. The door doesn't open.
Sometimes it takes another 10 or so pulls for the mechanism to open the catch.
Sometimes a lock and unlock on the keyfob and then the handle works first time.
Changing from a normal (gentle) pull on the handle to a more robust tug on the handle also seems to make no difference.

It feels to me like a mechanical link between handle and latch, but am I wrong? Is this an electric link which is going squiffy?

Any ideas? So far I've tried a well aimed squirt or two of WD40 into the latch mechanism when the door is open but the problem is still intermittant.

Once open, the door closes fine.

Not had precisely your symptoms, but I have had to have a door lock replaced on both of mine - had one done last night! New lock is £123 and about an hour to fit. In both cases it was the internal latch mechanism that was basically worn out.

hi, I've had the same problem, it's a plastic connecter on the push rod mechanism off the handle,
good news it only cost about a quid, bad news it's a sod to fit.

I have a similar problem on the driver side, I find if I push the door I hear a click and then try again to open it which generally works

Cheers for the responses all.

It's MOT day today, so fingers crossed that the problem doesn't occur today!

Think I'll just monitor the issue and if it starts becoming more regular, sounds like a lock replacement will be the way forward, although I will firstly investigate the £1.00 plastic connector on the push-rod that Wainwright mentions.

It'll hopefully wait until a warm day before I start fumbling around with tiny fixings for the door trim. Trying to do this on the driveway in mid December with numb fingers doesn't sound fun.

well the door is locking and dead locking fine, its opening fine from the inside handle

its just from the door handle where its not doing much at all on the outside

takes about 10 attempts to open it and it will open from the handle something is not lining up somewhere causing this problem

why can't audi make a proper car :audibash:

They did make a proper car, but things wear! You do know your car is at least 9 years old don't you. Sounds like you need a new catch or linkage, strip the door and have a look.

No update from here either.

I've done nothing about looking into this problem. I'm plucking up courage to strip the interior door trim off (but not sure where to start with this) to have a poke around to see if I can spot something obvious which is worn.

95% of the time it works fine, but once or twice I've had to ask the passenger to get in first, lean across and open the driver's door from the inside!
