Guys,
I've found a car that i like. However, there's a rust spot in the engine bay near the wastegate ( on the metal sheet)Is this a cause for concern. the car is low mileage at 22,000 miles

The engine was pretty clean when I got it, but I spent a bit of time giving it a bit of a spruce up. Then it just the matter of keeping it clean with a quick wipe over each time I clean the car.
klm3 if the corrosion is on the heat shield just below & to the right of the wastegate as you look from the front, don't worry. They all do that as they are exposed to extreme heat stress. Mine looks a bit spotty with rust marks and I was planning on either replacing it (part about £55 - which seems a bit expensive) or removing it & getting it replated (I know a place that can locally & quite cheap). Obviously if you are a little less obsessive about the appearance under the bonnet I sure it is fine to leave it.
However, if this is not where the rust is and it is on the chassis leg or inner wing it will need to be sorted (this sometimes can happen if someone has spilt some brake fluid during service).

Matt,
I have got a HPI check on the Laser Red RS2 sitting in my desk here - clean as a whistle. So if you were interested I would send it to you.
Go on you know it makes sense

Matt
That car must be waiting for you. And there must be some room for negotiation on price as it's been on the market for a few weeks now. Come on over and join the RS2 crowd.

Hello, newbie here
Some great advice guys.
I'm also an ex Corrado owner (VR6) possibly looking at getting an RS2 to replace my current and rather boring 2002 A6 3.0L. It's a very good car but just doesn't flick my switch
Instead of the usual problem of running the purchase by the missus I have to clear it with the company directors
as I am supposed to have a car under 5 years old however this rule isn't too firm thankfully.
BTW - Does anyone know anything about the 35,000 mile example currently on Autotrader???
Cheers
Paul

Welcome to RS246.com.
Had a look on Autotrader.co.uk
It is a little strange that the one with 35,000 miles is pictured outside a lot of lock up garages. Not the usual haunt for cars of insurance gp. 20!
If it is what it says it is & it should be immaculate the price is probably fair as you won't find many lower mileage RS2s around - 35,000miles is less than 4000 miles a year.
Don't discount the one above with 90,000miles - if it is in good solid condition and comes with a 2year warranty that covers everything - this could be the more shrewd buy. It has done 10,000 miles a year, but if it has been serviced and maintained correctly which is backed up by lots of paperwork it may actually be in as good a mechanical condition as the lower mileage one.
Both are in probably the most desirable spec (obviously depends on personal taste) of RS Blue & Blue Alcantara which usually adds a bit to the value of the car, as it is a unique colour & the one used in all the brochures & launch material. Not as subtle as Polar Silver though
From my reckoning both these cars seem to around the London area which is a long way for you to go & see a car. It might be worth checking out the www.s2forum.com]S2 Forum .I know there are a few guys with S2s/RS2s on the forum who would be much closer to home to you. It would be worth trying to meet up with one of them as they would be able to give you the low down on the RS2 & demonstrate the performance etc. before you make a long trip.
Hope that helps a bit

Thanks Glyn, looks like you have a nice example. I must admit that as much as I like the blue with blue alcantara I do like the polar silver (with black leather) for its understated looks.
I certainly wont discount higher mileage examples but I should be in the position to go for cars with under 75K on the clock and I'm going to wait a while and try to drive a good example if I can find someone close to home with one.
I'll be going on a tour of England in May with the missus so that might give me an opportunity to look in past on a couple of cars............... if I'm allowed
Do you use yours as an every day car??

Yes mine is my daily driver. However, it is only 3 miles to work from home, so I only do about 4,000 miles a year. I'm sure the car is capable of whatever mileage you do and be perfectly reliable, just as long as you service it correctly. It is a really pleasant car to drive and when you feel the need for speed the performance is simply awesome.
Overall the RS2 can be a little expensive to run - after all it was a £45K car when new - but if you find a good Audi specialist & use the like of VAG Parts to get your parts it will be no worse than most cars.
Certainly it is a good idea to look at as many as possible before you buy & be prepared to be patient. Be warned it will be very difficult not to buy the first one you see as the first time you experience the performance you will want your next fix as soon as possible
If the RS2 you are in doesn't pull like a Saturn V rocket it is not quite the ticket !!

I'd have to disagree here - I've had an RS2 since new and it's been remarkably cheap to run. The only major expense I've had, has been to replace the discs due to corrosion, which was caused mainly by not drying the discs properly after power washing the wheels.GlynG60 wrote:Overall the RS2 can be a little expensive to run - after all it was a £45K car when new - but if you find a good Audi specialist & use the like of www.vagparts.com]VAG Parts to get your parts it will be no worse than most cars.
Other than the above the car has been faultless, is serviced once a year at the original supplying Audi dealer for very reasonable prices.
Audi RS2 - the original
i think they can be expensive, but it depends how minted you are and how you drive it. ie track days & heavy right foot
fuel usage took some getting used to, hence lighter right foot
as for breakdowns in 2/3 years not many mainly a clutch/gearbox fault sorted with under a £1000.(most expense)
a couple of top mounts (expected), cambelt for peace of mind.
a few services to engine, brakes and air con.
scilly isles your right not that expensive.
