I've just been told that you need to initialise
The system which is why the bumper needs to come off,is this the case?

It certainly sounds like bollocks to me. Doesn't make any sense. Just had a look at the procedure for G65 - makes no mention of "initialising the system". Just whip the switch out, whip a new one in and bob's your uncle.

Depends on if the air con system seals when the switch is removed (very much doubt it) , if not then best of luck. The air con gas is not good for you or anyone else!! Best thing to do is drain the system, change the switch then re-gas. You have to be registered to handle air con gas aswell, me is registered.
Just a note, you can be prosecuted for releasing air con gas onto the atmosphere.

My understanding is that it self-seals when you remove the switch.

I admit, it's a bit ambiguous, though. Maybe someone who has done it can chime in?

That's shocking! Even to remove & replace the bumper it's only an hour... taking your time.

These mechanics will always try to baffle you in order to line their own pockets. There is no gas leak because there is some kind of schrader/pesto valve inside the switch. As soon as you unscrew it the system remains fully sealed!
