'glove' box is now, in my case a 'gun' box...
I seriously hope you're joking. We're all passionate about our cars but at the end of the day they're only a collection of metal and plastic which is insured and can be replaced. we however, are flesh and bone which is quite easily damaged beyond repair, pull out a gun and todays criminal is likely to pull out a bigger one and has probably less doubts about using it. is a car really worth dying for?

mmm...its illegal to have more than a 30% tint on the front windows now...which is the factory tint. If your friendly local plod is being picky they could give you a rectification order and youd have to remove it :(

I had mine done at a place in Chelmsford - all the glass, but no more tint than factory on the fronts ..Luminor security film is about £350 for the whole car - its Thatcham Q listed
cheers

Are the factory tints really 30%?? I hadn't noticed that there was any tint at all until someone pointed it out to me about 6 months after I had bought the car

How on earth can they measure that... a light meter reading outside the car Vs a light meter reading through the glass!? 8)

The plod use light meters to measure the tints. Obviously, most traffic cops dont have them, howver, they can order you to get them tested and then if they fail, force a rectification order.

I have light smoke on the front and medium smoke on the rears. With a black interior, the medium is dark enough so you can just about see silhoutees. The fronts are marginally darker, however, I think as long as your not taking the p*ss, then the plod should not really bother you.

Anyone see a picture of Prince Harry on his CBR1000 yesterday in the papers ?? Was riding with a very black tinted visor .... which is illegal ! Dont see him getting stopped either.

yep - the factory tint is 30% - or in another way it lets 70% of light through.

the lightest film you normally get aftermarket (other than clear security stuff) is about 55% or lets 45% of light through - this is 'light smoke' I guess

I just have factory at the front, and medium smoke on the rest
cheers

I am certainly interested in the security film, but not sure on the tint. Particularly given the start of this thread and Damons/Pauls experiences. Does anyone have photo's of a black saloon with tints by any chance??

I suppose some insurers may incentify the additional security with reduced premiums!?

Wishful thinking! Most would increase, due to the reduction in visibility from the vehicle.

Let us know if you find one that does reduce for tints, that would be refreshing. :o

Does anyone (Damon particularly) object to me moving this to the Audi ownership forum ?

It's of general interest and will be seen by most visitors there.

I have seen information which suggests that 'normal', untinted, glass only passes around 85% light and that a factory tint usually reduces this to somewhere between 70% and 80%.
