My car has been confiscated!!

We have a similar ridiculous law here relating to 'STUNT DRIVING'

Basically this was to prevent street racing (lol) and here in Ontario it says that anyone going 50kmh or more over the posted limit will be met with

car confiscated for 7 days (+all applicable costs...about $700)
license confiscated for 7 days
minimum $2,000 fine
lots of demerit points

If you're going fast enough or are in a fancy car, you'll likely end up in the newspaper.

The problem with this is, if a cop pulls you over for going 20 over and for whatever reason he decides to ruin your day, he can very easily say 'you were going 51kmh over the limit and we're taking your car'. You have no recourse...you have no way to have the evidence weighed. They are taking the role of judge, and giving it to our police officers.

FURTHER

If you take this matter to court, and even if you have overwhelming evidence that you were NOT speeding etc. and are found NOT GUILTY, you have still paid the $700 in impound fees and have no weigh to retrieve that.

It's an exercise in allowing the police to abuse power. I have a couple of friends who are judges, and they are hand picked after years of service in the legal community where they showed an impeccable record and the ability to allow the evidence to tell the story from both sides, with respect to guilt and innocence. With respect to the police officers I know...they haven't lol.

Lately I have been reading that the Ontario legislation on 'stunt driving' has expanded to include things as simple as jumping the gun and turning left at a light (like a UK right turn) if you don't have the right of way. i.e. someone on the other side is slow out of the blocks so you nick through. Incredibly, that gives the cops the right to take your car for a week etc.
