Re: Nostalgia attack, can buy back my favourite car I sold
Well, after a phone call from the tuners this morning, the car won't be ready until the beginning of September at the earliest........
While trying to get to the bottom of the power loss, various things were altered on the map and the previous map wasn't flashed back when the problem couldn't be found.
The mapper is going on holiday for 3 weeks from Tuesday and can't get to the car before then and boss man at the tuners that also does it with him, is away for the last 2 weeks of August....
They are going to manually restrict the boost on her and run some detcans to see if she is healthy enough to give back to me to "pootle around in" but they know that I don't pootle anywhere, so basically she will sit on my drive for the next month doing nothing. At least I can tweak other things but still, sigh.
Going to phone Keith at Revolution today to see what deal can be done on another set of Superturismo LM rims for this turd.

Re: Nostalgia attack, can buy back my favourite car I sold
Sigh, limped her back home today from the tuners in her semi-brain damaged state to sit on the drive until mid-September when she can next be mapped. In under 2 minutes of getting underway, the DCCD system flagged up an error and disabled itself. Couldn't be arsed to turn around as I knew it wasn't a terminal problem that I had to sort right now. Was under 1/4 tank of fuel so pulled in to put some in.
Filler cap wouldn't open at all, wasn't having any of it. Again, wasn't in the mood to fight with it so took the gamble on getting all the way back on whatever was in the tank. Since I wasn't allowed to really use any boost at all (0.3bar max), I was driving like a granny but still, I was amazed when I made it on to the driveway almost on vapours. Now I just have to get another 5 miles or so to the Petrol station tomorrow.....
Fixed the filler cap problem and fixed the boot release problem at the same time, amazing what a cable tie and some super glue can do to fix a stretched cable
I decided to pull the boot apart to see the exact extent of all the rust/water ingress from the various leaks, Christ, even worse than I thought. Ground out most of the rust ready for kurust and hammerite tomorrow.
The new Do-Luck clone bootlid should be here on Monday which will sort one of the leaks but three problems. Firstly, I am not totally sold on the QC of this bootlid. Secondly, my paint guys don't like Fibreglass much and have quoted me AT LEAST £350 to spray it up. Lastly, the bootlid only weighs 4KG so I will have to either disable the torsion bar that holds the current, much heavier bootlid static, bastardize it so that it can hopefully balance the much lighter weight or otherwise the bootlid may self destruct the first time the boot release is pulled
Wheels, wheels, wheels. The current ones are fecking growing on me.... With the suspension raised they look a lot better. The colour is still totally wrong and I hate to say it but, I am going to have to use 5mm hubcentric spacers all round. The 235/40 rubber is actually a bit of a godsend I think as it takes some of the sting out of the suspension. Sadly, with the suspension raised and the camber corrected, she isn't a sliding machine anymore but saying that, the DCCD isn't working currently so I can;t dump most of the power to the rear and I can't use boost, so vee shall see....
Sending the ECU off to be upgraded for the hell of it while I can't use the car and sending the rear Brembos off to be painted red to match the APs. Oh, not sure what the guys have done but brakes have gone poo too. Will take them apart an check the ABS sensors out.
The Clutch........ This was the very worst thing about the car. All is well! The ACT clutch juddered very slightly at first but within a few minutes was as smooth as silk and very similar to a normal clutch, no lead foot required to push the pedal down either
.
£3100 for the work this time around and I have a long list of things for me to sort and for them to sort again when she goes in for final mapping, joy. She is getting there slowly.....

It's starting to sound like a lot of hard work. Maybe you should leave the duck's arse au naturel, then, rather than spending a fortune painting it. At least that way the BECAUSE RACE CAR fanboys will be wetting themselves with glee when they see it.
What's wrong with the brakes? Gone soft? Maybe they left the lid off the reservoir while the car was sitting.
The wheels are fine. Try the spacers, but 5mm doesn't sound like much and I'd be surprised if you could get hubcentrics that thin.

Since you have started this thread i have really noticed scoobs and evo's on the road. There is a stupidly loud scooby on our estate that does late shifts, he is popular at this time of year when windows are left open at night
I can't believe how much work you have done and still have to do on this. Like the sound of the boot, don't like the sound of the price to spray it though

Re: Nostalgia attack, can buy back my favourite car I sold
Yep, the brakes one is a bit of a puzzler but since the rears are coming off I will flush super blue through and clean up the ABS sensors anyway. Dirty ABS sensors on these can cause a few different problems, one of which is linked to the DCCD so who knows. I will probably extract the pads too and clean both them and the discs with degreaser just to be certain.
Wasn't thinking when I typed it, you won't get hubcentric on 5mm. I will take one side of the wheels off today and measure stud length to and check to make sure there is enough lip as the rear already has 5mm on there. Still feel dirty using spacers but meh.
Lol, no way in hell regarding the bootlid, it will be going straight in to the boot and off to the painters as soon as it arrives. Haven't really done that much work yet Chunk. I have done a load of little tweaks, mostly non-engine, and have left that side to the people I trust. No way in hell would I have figured out the cam jump for example, not my scene.
Thinking about chopping out the current FMIC which rubs at various locations despite me already dremeling away a load of mateial and getting a better quality HDI unit, can get it anodized black too then so get rid of the tacky silver at the front....

Re: Nostalgia attack, can buy back my favourite car I sold
Arse, another expensive day. Took the car to see a client in Guildford as they find it hilarious that I turn up in a different car every time I go to see them. Even with me using virtually no boost at all, I am becoming smitten. It may rattle, a ton of stuff may still need fixing, the DCCD may be a potato currently but the handling is just outstanding, I point it and I am there, either like a bullet or beatifully skipping the backend out along the way.
Decided to stick to my guns and I am getting shot of the Hayward & Scott system that I bought for her when time was a factor and Milltek couldn't produce. Too loud and sounds like an annoying bee on crack. Milltek decat full system ordered, being made later this month. Great price and service as always from Keith at Revolution and 3mm spacers ordered too. I took the wheels off last weekend and measured 2mm less stud on the rears so the 5mm ones are coming of and the 3mm going on to even out the track, assuming that the front/rear hubs are matched widths.
Anti-lift kit ordered, front bump steer kit ordered, solid rear droplinks ordered, adjustable lateral rear lateral links ordered and trying to source a black HDI GT2 FMIC as the silver one on there is pissing me off. Dropping wheels off at Platinum wheel refurb in Swindon on Saturday and they have been instructed to match the matt graphite of my OZ wheels as closely as possible.
DAB aerial ordered and on the hunt for the factory DAB addon for the head unit. Also on the lookout for an entire WR1 black interior but they are rare an stupid money for jap crap.
Oh, the bootlid turned up, damaged by the courier so I am taking it to my paint guy first thing to see if they can do a flawless repair on the front left corner that got chipped....

Re: Nostalgia attack, can buy back my favourite car I sold
The part of me that likes Jap cars is the "mod it like you hate it" bit. I'm truly astounded at how many mods and aftermarket part there are available for Jap cars, it's almost redickularse. The part of me that hates Jap cars is the "I grew up in a country where 80% of the car were Jap" bit, they're common as muck... but I can't help liking a bit of muck.
No matter where you go, there you are.

Re: Nostalgia attack, can buy back my favourite car I sold
It is fecking annoying as I want to mod pretty well everything that I can just like the old scoob and due to having more money these days as my own boss, rather than when I was an employee, my lack of self-control is a pain in the butt.
I dropped the bootlid down to my paint/bodywork guy, who told me that he used to work for TVR in their bodywork section so he knows a thing or two about Fibreglass.
He says that there are a lot of little ripples and bits that he wants to sort out and I have told him I want it all to look as factory/flush/perfect as physically possible. Current price estimate is £500 for his work, leaving the car with him next week.

Re: Nostalgia attack, can buy back my favourite car I sold
Guys, I need your help, still fecking about with wheel colours and once again, not sure I have made the right choice.
Dropped the wheels off at Platinum Wheel Refurb in Swindon yesterday and explained/showed them my OZ wheels and that I wanted the same matt graphite as those or a little darker. They had various swatches but when I found the closest match, they showed it to me on a rim of a customers car and it came out lighter
.
I have ended up going with a dark anthracite, satin finish (which I am told is the matt). They seem a little surprised at my choice and can't remember anyone having that finish before in that colour from them. This now has me wondering is this is going to work or be another horribly wrong choice....... Should I call them and go for normal gloss finish?
I realise that it doesn't help not having actual colours to show you. All I wanted was the OZ colour but that isn't to be it seems....

Re: Nostalgia attack, can buy back my favourite car I sold
That's weird. When I needed an exact paint match my bodywork guy used a spectrophotometer to analyse the colour and mixed up an exact match from his magic potions. Perhaps it's not a wheel refurb place you should be taking it to, but a bodyshop, even if only to get a pot of paint.
Should be obvious if it's gloss or satin. Satin isn't matte.

These guys supposed to be one of the best outfits so I am trusting them, I did ask and ask.
I have looked at photos on google images and I think the end result won't be too bad so vee shall see. I will phone them in the morning to double check that the satin they have noted down is going to be near as damnit the same as matt. £212+VAT for the 4 and that includes taking the rubber off and refitting/balancing afaik.
Picking them up on Friday or Saturday.
