If they do the seal, I'm sure they will change the diff oil, but can't hurt to double check.

Stuck on the back of the gearbox (and part of it for all intents and purposes) is the transfer box (center diff) which has its own gear oil (different to ATF) which is what was leaking in the OP's pictures. So:

1. No
2. Yes
3. The first one.
Nice one, I understand it now-Thanks for the explanation

Anyone planning on doing this should probably plan on getting some new exhaust sleeves. Just sheered 2 bolts off and rounded another. And this was with blow torch, copious amounts of release oil and an impact wrench.

2 new sleeves ordered. 8L9 253 139A.

Also, the seal needs to be pushed to a depth of 1.7mm exactly. :audibash:

Actually, I don't know whether the 1.7mm applies to the new seal only, or both the new and old seals. Grr.

Anyone got a Bentley Manual? If so, what's is say in there?

I've got the Bentley manual but I can't find anything about gearbox output flange seal. Is it called something else in there? In the automatic section it doesn't mention it, that's all with the gear selection. There's a gasket/seal in the final drive section that looks roughly sort of what the photos show and involves taking the exhaust off (I'm an ignoramus though) but that doesn't mention anything about how far it needs to be pushed in. It just says replace gasket and replace bolt. Perhaps that's been the issue if the bolt isn't replaced as well? There's also an adjustment shim listed.

I've attached a pic of the page I'm thinking might be.

This it??
This could of course be entirely the wrong bit of the car

Close. It's number 9 that we're interested in.

Maybe have a look at the transfer box bit.

There's nothing. A transfer box is not mentioned.
