Could be one of the pulley or belts. I had a faint ticking noise and MRC diagnosed and fixed the problem. (for the life of me I cant remember what part it was, will have to search my emails). But if I was you I would take it to a garage to get looked at ASAP. It reminds me of a old M42 engine that has a very worn timing belt tensioner.

EDIT, ok just looked what I had replaced to resolve ticking I had, turned out I needed these parts.

079 903 137 S AUX BELT £15.29

079 903 133 AK TENSIONER £112.33

079 903 341 D ROLLER£31.28

Maybe a bad case of exhaust valve chatter? I think most get this with a cold car, but disappears after a few.

Engine audio clip sounds fine to me btw

Could the noise be from the timing not being right?

Well the car is booked in for next Monday so we shall see. Your responses gave me enough reassurance that i perhaps wasnt imagining something, thanks.

Will post the result - might become my fist test for Warranty Direct

Well the good news is nothing was found to be wrong with the exhaust sound. No faults showing, no noticable power loss, nothing. Good news apart from the bill.

Where did you go?

If you want a 2nd opinion it would be worth swinging in past Ken Brown's place at 36 Hepburn Rd, Hillington Industrial Estate, he certainly won't try to pull the wool over your eyes.

Went to Ayr Audi. When i dropped the car off i talked to the Master Tech and took him out to hear the car. He didnt seem worried then. Ayr have been good in my few experiences with them.
Was thinking of trying the A4Audi guys you mentioned, but Hillington is much better for me.

I haven't been to the Clydebank guys, but Ken has looked after my S2 for several years. Glasgow Audi put some work his way too.
I'm sure if you popped in he'd have 30 seconds for you.
