Gearbox brain burp
RE: Re: RE: Gearbox brain burp
I think the A8 W12 uses the same box as the RS6 (without the strengthening). Not sure about the Phaeton.

RE: Re: RE: Gearbox brain burp
Bit of further research shows that bam is right. The very first A8 W12 used the same box as ours (in fact, that was the one they used to develop ours). Later A8s and the C6 use the 26A, albeit strengthened in the case of the C6.
Looks like there are no really fundamental differences in the boxes (other than the extra speed). I wonder if the C6 will suffer gearbox problems, too. Not that it bothers me, I'll never have one of the fugly things.

speedfr38ky and Nudenut are running 962Nm and 925Nm respectively, I thought those guys would've had a sign of issues already if the 26A wasn't up to task.
Effing C5 gearbox!!!!

Does their DRC work too? Is it possible that Audi can learn from its mistakes?

RE: Re: RE: Re: RE: Gearbox brain burp
Would a C6 box go in a C5?
Or failing that, are there ways to upgrade / strengthen the C5 box so it's not so much of an achilles heel?

Best ask Grizz about C6 DRC...Shoppinit wrote:Does their DRC work too? Is it possible that Audi can learn from its mistakes?

It's not aimed at you Dave but this topic has been done to death and I'm expecting that your quote will restart it all again with the same overall result... no one will have the balls to uprate their 'box.
No matter where you go, there you are.

RE: Re: RE: Re: RE: Re: RE: Gearbox brain burp
Didn't the chap from Dubai (Paul23) mod his box with an upgraded Torque converter from the States and some internal strengthening ?
Just to add some other options to this never ending story would it be possible to fit a DSG box as the 6 speed one in my R32 is far superior to ye olde worldy auto in the C5.
Are there any large output cars (of any make) running DSG boxes ?

If, or should I say When mine pops, I'll be asking the warranty company for the sum to replace but then look to spend it trying an upgraged alternative, not a manual.
I reckon Doug would be up for the challenge!

RE: Re: RE: Re: RE: Re: RE: Gearbox brain burp
That was Paul23. Haven't seen him around for a while. Didn't have internal strengthening to the box though, just the uprated TC.
The mechanicals of the box are bulletproof. It's the friction material that wears. And the original TC oil seal that was weak and prone to failure.
The stuff that kills our box costs pennies to replace. It's just that it's such a PITA to remove and take apart that you don't mess around and change the whole lot.

Just to answer my own question (after a quick bit of googling) the new Skyline GTR which is 480 BHP has a DSG box so it could be a possibility........

You can buy/get rebuild the TC/VB/whole box from Level10 or IPT trans (both in the US).
You get bullet proof replacements for TCs, VB's or whole boxes OR you can send them yours for the bulletproof treatment. Alternatively, buy a rebuild kit and get someone like Sussex Autos to rebuild it for you.
I'm not sure how you could get a warranty company to pay for it though, that's a lot of shipping when proper Audi replacements are available in the UK...

RE: Re: RE: Re: RE: Re: RE: Gearbox brain burp
So brake bands and clutch packs then.
Are there no uprated friction materials available?
I guess the major problem is the weight of the car and overcoming inertia.
I've been very sensible with caring for my box (oooh err etc) and have never done any drag starts (yet) as this (IMO) is what kills them.
