How much would I be looking at?

I have always changed the exhausts on my cars, but i'm finding it hard to justify if it has little performance gain.

Thx
OMG

you NEED to change the exhaust on the RS 6 to the NON RES. It totally transforms the car. It takes on a completely different personality. The OEM exhaust is virtually SILENT in comparison
From Milltek to OEM is like going from an 8 Pot to a 2CV ;)

But is it "just" sound?

I know the V8 sounds beautiful, but £800 is a lot of cash for a nice sound track.

I've always change the exhausts on my Impreza and it released both power and sound.

It's a toss up between a new head unit, was looking at the Kenwood DNX5240BT and an exhaust. I already have a MRC stage 1+ map.

If you've got the Stage 1+ map then you'll not see a whole lot more power unless you put on the bigger down pipes AFAIK.

I agree that £800 is a lot of money for a noisier drone when cruising on the motorway! I'd go for the Head Unit, or splash out the £2.5K ish to get the full exhaust and stage 2 map.

I am surprised it changes the personality - is this just noise or also responsiveness and spool up time?

I am not a fan of louder exhausts on the RS6 as the whole point in my opinion is that it is a stealth super saloon. I have not tried Milltek but there are plenty of ABT sports exhausts here and they sound good on acceleration but resonate the cabin when cruising at motorway speed - so badly that my mate cruises in 4th to change the note!

Mine is an Audi exhaust but I was told it is their sports (slightly louder) version as it has black oval tips - not sure if this is true or not....

AFAIK to really get much change to performance you need not only to change the main exhaust (Res or Non-Res) which is what most people quote prices for (typically c £850) but also change the down pipes to larger bore (nominal 3") either fully de-catted or with fewer cells - this costs a good deal more.

The Res system doesn't increase the noise as much as the non-res system

It is the bigger bore downpipes that really free up the turbo's improving spool up times and lowering back pressure.

Fully decatted will definitely fail MOT, whereas 100 cell is marginal, and 200 cell should be OK - I think the standard is 400 as fitted (with smaller downpipe).

Now - will the experts please tell me what I've got wrong in all that!

Changing exhausts to a non OEM version will improve performance AND sound.

A catback system is likely to achive 10-20bhp. DPs possiblhy a further 10bhp. A remap with the exhaust changed releases even more bhp/ft lbs.

I think the beauty of the sound of an exhaust is in the ear of the beholder, to mix metaphors. I personally think the RS6 in the youtube video sounds awful, and I wouldn't do anything to change the OEM exhaust note of mine.

If I had a B6/B7 S4 however, it would be a different matter and I would definitely be changing the exhaust to something that sounds a little less like a sewing machine.

WTF are you on about ?!

How does a B6/7 V8 sound anything like a sowing machine? It's the same feckin engine as the RS6 minus turbo's!!!

It's still a 4.2litre V8. It still sounds like a V8 with or without an aftermarket exhaust.

Still sounds lovely. End of.
