AFAIK there is no reason to remove the rack at all when doing the suspension (see the sticky thread at the top of this forum to see what's involved). But equally there shouldn't have been any need to have any heat involved either......

Hey, I'm a plum when it comes to these matters, he could have told me the tooth fairy did it and I'd have believed him All I know is that prior to the work being undertaken there was no leak, and then there was.... they did something. To be fair I don't give a monkeys how it was broken because I didn't have to pay for the new one (thank good) but I'm just going on what I've been told by the tech who is a trusted and very good friend of my brothers, as well as mechanical wizard...

I had a look at the 'sticky' thread re the suspension and I only wish it didn't look as though it was written in Japanese. Alas, I am not technically minded - I wish I was though.

It looked like a good one, I just preferred the avant because of the fact we've got one boy, we're pregnant with another and we've got Alfred a 4.5 stone english bull terrier (and a pram soon) to mobilise so... I had a look at it though - looked nice but I'm not sure what the guys name was.. In fairness the guy I bought mine off took me out with him but you've got to go out in it haven't you. how much did you get it for afterwards?

I'm not questioning the wizard - I'm wondering what Fontain were doing under there with a gas axe when changing suspension parts - and what else they could have damaged in the process!
I only wish it didn't look as though it was written in Japanese.
Well, at least you can look at the pictures!!

Jock told me exactly that the seal on the rack had been melted so there was defo heat under there. Call me thick (see above) but is there more than one way of doing it (other than the pictures in the sticky section?) Jock gave it a good once over and has stripped it out so would have spotted (hopefully touch wood) any other problems because I'd asked him to perform a 'once over/service' while he was at it incase I'd bought a dog.

Just hope the weather improves because we're waiting for the delivery of my new rack or I've got this rubbarsh 307 diesel over christmas and its just started snowing - just think of all the fun I could be having...

Yeah the pretty pictures lol..

Fontain fitted my H&R coilovers FOC approx. 18 months ago (under their warranty) and car has been perfect ever since. No issues with steering here..

Just to update this thread I've just spoken with Marcus Robinson from Fontain (who saw this thread). It was leaking beforehand so it seems so I just wanted to add that to be fair to fontain (who I've never actually dealt directly with re my car) the car was put in by the trader who I dealt with, who declined to have the work done but has ultimately ended up paying for it.... fair play to Marcus for getting hold of me..

Hi Chris,

Sorry to trouble you but could'nt help noticing your post regarding the replacement of your DRC at our dealership. I just thought you should know that the steering rack was noted as leaking badly when the car was with us for the Coil over work a few months ago along with other items but the customer declined to have the work done. We never use high heat in these areas and the work does not involve removing the rack. We have replaced dozens of DRC suspensions so take negative feedback very seriously. I just wanted to set the record straight as in this case as it would give you and other forum readers the wrong impression of our workmanship. If you need any other information please don't hesitate to contact me. 07831 *******

Kind regards

Well that confirms that it was nothing to do with the suspension change, but does leave an open question on what has been done under there at some time in the past with heat....
