OK used VAGCOM for fault codes and get:
00856 - Radio Antenna
36-00 - Open Circuit
Does this suggest more like a break in the aerial lead rather than the amplifier or is this the same code as others have had and it did turn out to be the amplifier?
Its def a tuning problem. The amp is working but just a very feint signal being heard.
