Well it seems you can mod a b5 but not a b7, na na, na na na. lol.
sorry b7 is a lovely car but not a car can remap for £500 and get near 500 bhp with a bit of cat gutting, here lies the b7's na issue. Great Audi but nowt like turbo.
I too dont really want one.

Yep, i too could've easily bought a b7, but instead searched for a mint low mileage b5 with big plans to mod the balls off it! NA just isn't the same when it comes to modding i'm afraid!
A friend of mine now has a b7 after coming from a 996 turbo, says he misses that enormous shove and kidney mashing thrust that he got when the turbos kicked in!

It will be interesting to see what engine finally ends up in the RS5, nobody seems to know for sure, if it's forced induction then it will make the NA B7 look rather obsolete.

I appreciate what you are saying and the fact you have owned both gives you a better insight than me BUT the fact I don't want a B7 even though I could probably stump up the cash surely counts for something? :?:
That's a bit of a strange comment really isn't it?

So you don't want one because you think the one you have is better or you don't like the engine? Have you actually driven one or had one for say a weekend to get a real feel for the car? I can assure you they are a better engineered car than the B5 and so they should be as the technology is 5-6 years newer.

I don't need to drive a B7 to know I don't want one, there are many technically superior cars I have never driven and don't fancy.
Cars are emotive items and desirabity goes beyond technical excellence.
An E46 M3 is technically superior to a B5 RS4 but for similar reasons as with the B7, I don't want one.

Every car gets better engineered with each new version but not necessarily more desirable.
Take for example Mk2 Golf GTI vs Mk3 Golf GTI or 993 vs 996.

Looking at previous posts, clearly I'm not the only one who feels this way 8)

Anyway Contigo, you had a B7 and now have a B5 yet defend the B7 to the hilt! Was it purely a financial decision or are you being devil's advocate :?:

Well I have a B5 and had a friends B7 to drive for a few days and even though its not a long time I got a feel for it. The handling and the modern feel of the B7 was very nice and I wish I had similar in the B5 as it did feel dated coming back to it and not as planted. Once I got driving in the B5 I enjoyed that much more, it felt more solid, put a smile on my face as I put my foot down and just had more emotion for me. btw. A standard B5 to standard B7 if I took both for a run and had to decide on one I would be swayed to the B7. The B5 upgrated is a completely different story :-)

I think this debate is very hard to win on either side as it depends what you are after in a car. some people like the modern feel of a car, they appreciate RS cars but the B5 wouldnt do it for them...people who a owners of B5s and who love them I think would defend it to heavens, they may try the B7 but would always come back.

A simple comparrison to me is the 996 Turbo and 993 Turbo. I had a 996 for about 3 years and loved it, I have always loved the look from the outside of the 993 as a far superior look but coming from the 996 couldnt deal with the dated feel of its interior. I then drove a 993 Turbo and I just loved it after the first few hours...there was something more emotional about driving it, I was smiling just going in a straight line. Coming back to the 996 of course power was more available, it was comfortable and I felt more confident.....but given the choice....993 Turbo all the way!! Now my friends or most of the others who owned similar at the time wouldnt have preferred the 993....you either go one way or the other in the case of the 993/996 or B5/B7

I have loved the RS4 since they came out and feel privalaged to own one now but I think thats the minority of people, I am single, no dogs or need for an estate yet I bought one :-)

The look of the B7 will attract a lot more new followers as it does look extremely nice and will attract people who may not necessarily be car nuts or have been following the RS4's

ok my hands are getting tired and I have most probably wrote a load of crap as I am very hungover and looking at a few inches of snow outside mywindow in Apirl :-)

Not at all, it's a good insight and as you say there is no right or wrong answer.

Everyone has different priorities. For me (and not necessarily anyone else) if I wanted an RS4 to use daily and put lots of miles on it would be a B7, for a weekend toy to cherish like a classic car it's the B5. If I could afford/justify owning both I (like S4INT) probably would but the B7 wouldn't replace the B5 because it wouldn't be a car to pamper and tinker with and save for special trips and I wouldn't feel I was taking care of a rare and iconic car for future generations to appreciate.

For daily use, I admit the B7 is a better car

i think those of you with B5's that are not giving you a planted a stable suspension feel need to sort your running gear out.
My B5 was admittedly the scariest car I have driven at speed and felt like I had gremlins in the steering column. anything over 100 required serious concentration just to maintain line! Suspension was crashy over undulations and the tyre combo was way too soft loading up into corners.

since then it has been poly bushed throughout, KW v3 coilovers and some decent tyres (ditched the pirellis)
It now tracks, corners and holds line at speed as it should have done from the factory! I have driven and been passenger in a number of 07/08 high end cars and none of them really compete in steering feel and balance.
again not a fair comparison with a modification against factory, but I was amazed at the difference.

Totally agree with what jc said, and not surprising really! The b5 has had a long history of touring car racing here and in germany. Upgrade a few bits here and there on a b5 and you end up with a totally different car!
