It looks like a Lexus/Audi bastardisation

I don't like it

the music on the advert is OK though, but its not Deep Purple performing Hush is it?

 RM3D This topic is about the Jag XF SV8, not your personal vendetta regarding how "wonderful" M3s are. And with all due respect, if you can't say anything nice, get lost.

I can't work Jag out.... the XKR sort of looks OK, but I can't help thinking toyota Supra from the side.

The XJ or whatever its called is OK .....the X type is (to me) abysmal.

Maybe the Indians will manage a 'hotter spicier' look?!!

Drove the new M3 in greasy conditions and was perfectly fine. If you can't manage a car with DSC in the rain... maybe you shouldn't drive a car in the first place.
Visit the Nurburgring when it's wet and you'll get the picture. Lots of damaged powerful rear-drive cars. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cuMTcrZpMFI

Switzerland is littered with 4wd cars. Subarus and Quattros everywhere. Admittedly 4wd is not the last line in traction but, as anyone who has experienced a British winter with Quattro will know, it's just nice to have it there for pulling out of junctions, flooded roads, wet leaves, etc. Just bear in mind that when you hit the brakes it makes almost no difference...

Incidentally, they call it ESP in Audis.

So you get flummoxed by a few leaves and a few drops of water???? Okaaay.

Anyhoo... I think the XF is good value too, but in V6 petrol/diesel guise.

Please re-read my post. I don't get flummoxed by leaves and water. I drive a car with permanent four-wheel-drive. Audi believe we are a key market for the Quattro system on account of the wet and slippery nature of our roads for approx. 8 months a year. This, unlike snow, is unpredictable and virtually invisible and you invariably encounter it at speed. ESP/ASR/DRC are reactive and therefore only react to loss of control, unlike proper 4wd which prevents the scenario in the first place.

Now, would you care to impart your wisdom regarding it being good value, but in V6 guise? The V8 supercharged would be my choice.

It's like sticking a V6 engine in an RS4, oh wait a minute, that's what he has.

RM3D - are you honestly saying that given your weather conditions in Switzerland and northern Europe generally, that 2WD has better traction and better all round grip?

If so, perhaps you can comment on why F1 cars (and other top sports cars) have to be paced in heavy rain - even when not racing close together?

It is simple physics, 4wd vs 2wd. twice the contact area and the power to each wheel could be 50% less than the same powered car on 2wd.

Good point. Wasn't there an incident when a Lister Storm had to ask an Audi RS safety car to slow down in bad weather?

Russian/Canadian/Swiss dude - what does your dad think of the new Jag? I see you play a part in helping him choose the specification but, ultimately, only he knows whether or not the car is any good. Magazines don't paint the whole picture.

I agree that after Quattro the lack of 4wd would be missed in such a car but, apart from the odd PAG (Volvo, AM, Land Rover) influenced 4wd X-Type, isn't beefy front engine and rwd Jaguar's thing? Many motoring journos seem to think the 4.2 engine is out-of date but how many allegedly new engines aren't just a development of a previous unit? Interior wise, it seems uncharacteristically modern but that is no bad thing. Don't they have motorised vents?

No of course not. I am just saying that you don't need 4wd unless you are a farmer. Modern electronic control systems are enough. I drove a RWD car here for a while... and... No problem.

So many fwd wheel spin on tight junctions that I use every day (and I've seen rwd cars lose their back end too), usually they have to move out so slowly that it is actually dangerous. Whereas I can either just go as normal or turn off the ESP and push it with no problems or wheel spin.

Even then, with 780Nm of torque I do have to be carefull not to end up doing doughnuts.
