ah a bit of competition...... we like it :D

i asume you will be keeping the 4wd ...? will be intresting to see what box you try as the bespoke quaiff box we inquired about, the most they would rate it to was 800 hp and 650lb-ft. Of which a 1000hp would exceed...as you know

hope you can get it there too

there are 2 for this year but they are staying twin turbos, 3.1 litres, and they both are getting nos but only to aid with lag on 1/4s and to just get that 1000bhp to sya it ihas done that - but not used on track - so 900bhp with nos off. One is an everyday car and the other is more trackday oriented. keeping stock boxes and will look stock from outside.

well about time to fill you all in.......

i started this insane mission about 2 years ago, at first i was going to run twins still and go the 2871r path.
i had at this time got a company turbo dynamics involved, a very clever guy there called mano, decided that for what we wanted to achive the big single was the way to go...So...............
he built me up a garrett gt4088r which would have given us about 800bhp without nitrous...

however after much more thought, time, money and research i decided that i didnt have enough hp to get us what i set out to achieve.... so another meeting was arranged, sadly mano was leaving the company
by this time and was just on his last week, so we went through everything again, and both agreed that a 1000hp was the benchmark..

before he left he built me this,Image...... with a bit of a special mod to it

we should have no problems cracking out a 1000hp with no nitrous, expensive upgrade to say the least....
it was also decided that we are now going to run 2 wastegates, one for each bank of the twin scroll turbine housing
Image

by this time i had taken the decision to turn my everyday car (that i paid £18,000)for when i bought her, into a dedicated sprint car..

so i started stripping as much weight out as possible....
i removed EVERYTHING.... the final weight can be found with pics in my gallery....

as we were not in a great hurry i kept digging and digging about how we could overcome the drivetrain issue, as what i wanted the car for was a big issue when it came to gearbox ect ....

i solved many of these problems like the clutch shafts and aproched a few companys about gearboxes, who just said they couldnt help...

quaife were the only ones that wanted to help, quoting me a bespoke seqential box, But would only rate it to 800hp and 650 lb-ft which was still no good as it was going to be about £8,000 and i still might break it...

so serious thought time.................................................................... :?

i had now decided to totaly dedicate this to the drag strip and changed my goal to run the first audi 8 second pass in the world and eventualy break into the 7's.......

so i went to see a guy called jon webster, of webster race engineering to discuss rear halfing the car (live back axel) ...But this was also to be a downside to the s4, as all 4wd audi's the engine is too far forward of the front wheels, meaning that as we launched the car, the back squats and the front rises, but as the front came down jon was worried that there would not be enough weight and the front would make the back to light and light the tyres up.......

by now i had invested so much money and time, DEPRESSED was not the word... but i couldn't give up this was my dream.

so i had faith that i would find something transmittion wise... WRONG
after nearly giveing up several times my brother ian joined me with the car and we have never looked back since........

where did we go from here ...................... to be continued

Speaking of 'boxes, the only offering Quaife have now, keeping it 4wd, would lose the torsen and part of the engine sump, to make way for GTR drivetrain as they do have the same final drive - not a very good option at all IMHO. Still working on another solution though........

Where is RM3D? His M3 (or indeed any car in BMW group) would mash this into the ground.

Perhaps take some advice from him?

well ....

i was not going to give up ...... no way
the only way forward was to invest somemore silly money into the project.

i was now convinced that the 4wd was an impossible mission for what power and launches i needed. So we ditched it compleatly..this is how ...

ive known andy for about 6 years now, He refills my nitrous bottles.
this his his game and he was glad to help..... andy is currently the fastest pro mod drag racer in the country, second in europe.
he built, runs, and maintains his own car, as a family team with his wife son and daughter all have major rolls in the team....
Image

when we went to see andy my dreams had come true...

he was in the middle of a project for a customer that was in the same boat as us... kept smashing gearbox after gearbox, and managed to run a 9.93
the pics in my gallery are of the framework in this car... this car is now reliable, and strong enough to do this.....

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=r-DIbQQ67JA

another...

http://video.google.co.uk/videoplay?doc ... 9&hl=en-GB

this was the first outing for john and only the 3rd run since the car was finished

So the decision was simple.... the finances not..... to date for the chassis £30,500 and thats not a compleate, there is still the lexan windows paint and a <beep> load to finish off.... plus the new engine mounting means we have about 25" of room in front of the engine to mount the turbo and liquid to air intercooler in, so another manifold is now being designed and fabricated, more ££££££

so we now have a car good enough to acheive my goal... :D

as most of you know the s4 is a heavy old chap, and this is how we have changed that very much......

starting at the front,
there are some very clever mods, we will no longer need the subframe or the front struts and heavy uprights, the engine will be fixed by motor plate to the new bulkhead which is moved back 15" so as to put the weight of the engine behind the front wheels, the suspension and wishbones is all custom mounted by andy on a new chromolly tube subframe, there are no uprights or hubs these are now all integral parts as the fornt shocks have spindle mount wheels, which saves us about 200kilo's in all....
you can see from this pic what i mean....
Image

i chose these fronts..Image

fingers crossed we will have a full 1 peice front end and therfore have full access to work aroung the engine, but this will not be a priority and come when the budget allows.

Moving inside the car we now have a major head start to our goal with the new transmittion and clutch, mated up throgh a trick titainium bell housing
Image

the jerico 5 speed was chosen by andy as the best route we could go ,this is the box that many pro stock cars are running.
cheap at £5,500 but when you add the bellhousing, another £3290 it starts to hurt...

Then there is the clutch....
another £4230....

Image

this is a purpose built drag racing 5 1/2" clutch ....
it is unlike your normal clutch as it is designed to slip....
in simple terms its like a centrifugal clutch it has small counter weights which the faster they spin bite harder and harder....
principals being when the clutch has full bite it will start to slow the engine speed, as we are trying to keep the engine at full torque all the time, we can do so by changing the amount of weight on the throw out bearings.
More weight will make the clutch bite quicker and less hold off a bit, we can set this up to the engine by logging engine rpm and gearbox input and output shafts, the same principal as bhp and torque that the engine rpm and the full lock up of the clutch on a graph these two meet at a given rpm like this shows...

To me the clutch all sounds complicated, Luke robinson tells me "its all pretty eazy when its set up right"

were very lucky to have luke intrested in the project and keen to help us, and fingers crossed have enough time to join the team, luke is also a vag man at heart, i know he can't wait to get it to the track ..... his knowledge will only progress us further and futher.....

Continuing to the rear from the jerico
Through the new propshaft
Image

And into the 3rd member and spool....
Image

which becomes the drive in the back axel with what gear ratio suits us when we test the car.

this is one of andy's, One off bespoke rear casings which we are using, this will cope with all the abuse we can throw at it ..... :D
Image

new strange 35 spline hi tuff drive shafts...
Image

the rear shocks are pretty much your usual coilover, Apart from they are £500+vat a pair + £70 for the springs ....
Image

The rear brakes are also made of ultra lightweight alloy to aid weight reduction, as are the discs very light too
Image

This of course is then all fitted into the totaly bespoke 3/4 chassis, designed and built by robinson race car's, this picture shows you all the tubes needed to make the car stiff enough to run in the low 8 second bracket.. the chassis compleatly replaces the floor, this is then all tied into the front end and the floor is replaced....
Image

As the potential the car would have andy advised me that it would be best if we had a full funnycar cage built into the chassis, this would also make the car track legal down to 7.5 seconds....
Image

For something for you all to be aware of..... santa pod has a new set of proposed rules for cars soon..... even run what ya brung.. i will post a copy up for you all to read soon... it wont really apply to most of you but cars looking at running 9.99 or quicker must have a minimum of a 10 point cage and cars that trap at 150mph+ must have a parashute...
these are only proposed not regulation yet.....
