I have owned many different turbo cars all of which I have chipped and not even one turbo has ever letten go.

Ok upping the boost does shorten the turbo life but when you consider they were meant to last the life of the car so you are looking at 200k easy then there is no reason why the wont last 150 or so chipped. It is mostly down to how they are treated.

I ALWAYS heat my car up and cool it down properly ( prob over protective ) change my oil every 5k at the most. I drive fast most of the time, I used to drive fast all the time (getting old) and still my turbos last.

Just a few

21 turbo quadra running 1.3 bar for 80k

RS Turbo x 2 running 1.2bar for 20k ish each

Cossie running 1.5bar for 25k had over 120k on the clock turbo fine but head gaskets x 3

EVO 5 running 1.7bar for 10k with me and 15k with new owner

Audi S2 running 1.4bar for 10k and 10k with new owner 100k on the clock

None of the above ever had turbo trouble and they got a very hard life

I really think you need to run and maintain these cars properly and 90% of the time they will be fine.

My Audi S4 only has 60k on the clock and only been running 1.0bar for around 4k so to early to say.

I never budget for a turbo when buying a car, you have know idea what will pack up first.

Yes I know folks do suffer turbo failure prob the main reason is its past life with lack of care and boost leaks
BMW 540i

F90 M5
X3MC
RS3 Saloon
RS7 FL best car I've owned. No faith in turbo oil screen (turbos failing) or sticking oil scraper ring causing missfires.
F10 M5 LCI still no rear grip lol
S7 black Edition Too big and heavy
S3 8V FL DSG 310ps, road noise is a joke
RS3 8P Rubbish
C7 RS6 Fantastic car but missed playing
GTR R35 800bhp, too extreme, crazy fast though
911 Turbo Remapped. Hated it
F10 M5, awesome but no rear grip
RS6 V10 700BHP crazy
Porsche Cayenne Turbo S 600bhp

I know what you're saying Paul, I think Mike summed it up well.. its a question of taking a gamble unless you find one thats had the problem rectified/uprated.

The other way would be to know a cars history in detail and know how it has been treated by previous owners.. but thats pretty rare, specially when talking about something like an S4 because they aren't what you'd call common. :)

Sure there were no rebuilds for the Cossie mate, thats an awful long way it travelled... :D

Grant

I had 5 cossie's in total and had to replace the head gasket on every one. @ 120k there was quite a bit of piston slap but once warm it went fine and still bl00dy quick 8)

Oh yes a truck load of oil
