Yours is about the same age as mine. The setting you describe is possible on my car (but I chose not to do that), so it must be on yours.

find it real hard to know when locked if you are standing beside the car i.e cant see lights flash/no sound from silent door locks

Carps about vagcom stuff -

1) What exact lead and where from?

2) Where did you get the software from?

3) The Bentley manuals where from?

Seriously intend buying these as my business would benefit also!

Enabling the horn on arm/disarm:
(you can do this with the ignition off)
Select the central locking module - 35
Select the 'recode' option
Make a note of the current value in case it all goes horribly wrong.
Add 1024 to the value you noted, enter it in the field and hit save.
Close the controller.

That should be about it.

How to do it isn't in doubt - I've successfully followed that same procedure on my RS6 - it's a matter of whether the dealer is wrong when he says that it can't be done on a my2000 S4.

My bet is that it will work in exactly the same way as it does on all other A4 and A6 models.
