Cripes. Any idea what caused it?

Think I'm going to be buying an in car fire extinguisher....
I honestly don’t know
That morning jumped in the car to do school run and noticed the power steering was squeeling as it was low on fluid
So got to my workshop and topped it up as we closed for the day
Drove home no problems
Parked up (did give it a blast home) and then started

Maybe excess oil got onto the manifolds ???

1st rule - you DO not open the bonnet if you see smoke coming from the bay. You feed some oxygen in when you pop the bonnet and flames just kick off.

Gutted for you m8 such a los

Thinking about this over lunch - there was one mod down in that corner. The fogs were converted to HID and used as were permanently on as DRL's. The Viper HID pack was tucked into the space in front of the intercooler behind the front grille in that corner, and wedged in place in the recess below the grille.

HID pack could conceivably run hot?? Or maybe come loose and nestle up against the IC and so get hot?? And if some oil (or steering fluid was added to the mix???

I've got a spare HID pack if it's needed!!

IIRC there's an electrical connections junction box for the front end (headlights and so forth) just under what looks like the burn hotspot on the bonnet there. It's next to the power steering reservoir.

Pretty much the only fluid in a car that will flash into flames when it gets hot is power steering fluid / ATF. Even petrol will just evaporate if you chuck it on a manifold.

We had an engine fire when a power steering pipe burst in the Subaru when hooning through the Pyrenees. Luckily I was able to extinguish it with the out of date extinguisher that I’d chucked in my luggage as an afterthought. I now carry an extinguisher in the glove box.

Dave I took that hid kit off and disconnected a few days after I bought the car as I hated the fact that the fogs were on as soon as you put ignition on

You only needed to move the fuse and it would revert to the standard operation!! I used to do it for each MOT as it tended to "confuse" the testers who couldn't get their heads round the purpose of DRL's

Oh well!!

I guess that it does sound as if this was splashed steering fluid, or a leak somewhere in that area that firstly caused the loss of fluid, and then when refilled, dripped it somewhere too hot.

Looks like breaking her will be the best (only??) option

I would be interested in the roll bars if you do decide to break it.

Personally, I like these. Foam is good. Powder fkks everything up, you might as well just let it burn. 2.4L is big enough to stand a chance of having some effect.

and the polished one is nice too.
