There are a few companies claiming to be able to repair the s-tronic unit. Maybe worth creating a database of links as the gearbox is the one thing new owners are twitchy about!

The gearbox oil changed is not shown on the car display. It's something you have to remember and get done at the right time. Think Audi are clamping down on warranty claims so make sure you do the servicing on time.

OP - was your car sourced from an approved used Audi dealer?
If so, they should have spotted this when they took the car in, and rejected it as not having FSH. Possible pushback for you to retain your car?

It was from a approved Audi dealer and they did the gearbox oil change before they sold the car so knew it was late. Never told me it was late or that it would void the warranty. Hence why they are bending over backwards to help me as they know they are in the wrong. Just want them to replace the gearbox and give me the car back. The they are trying to work out what option would lose them the least. Not sure what price a car with a damage gearbox would got for at auction.

Good luck!

The dealer should know better really but saw a margin opportunity in selling the car. Arse truly bitten now I imagine.

Well just got the news that the plan is to fix the car. So I am more then happy with that. Said might take a few weeks as they want to check he car over first to make sure they agree with my local dealer. Am hoping it's a new gearbox which I presume would come with a 2 year warranty as it's not a warranty job. Have a feeling I won't get the car back till early September but glad I will get it back as I their is not another RS4 for sale with the same spec and condition.

Just had a call from the garage and the news is not good. They have decided that its not cost effective to replace the gearbox, so the options are a replacement car or my money back. So am a bit annoyed and upset as thought I was getting the car back. What he told me next made me very annoyed.

They have told me that the previous owner refused to replace the gearbox oil at the previous service as he could not afford it. Not long after that the owner noticed the noise and took into the dealer (that I got the car from) and they said audi would not do anything as the oil was not changed. so what he did next shocked me. he went to the sales guys and sold the car to them. for some reason the sales guys never checked with the service department. so the owner knowing sold the car with a faulty gearbox which they then sold onto me.... not sure how that can happen and does make me think do I want another car from them.....

so I am now waiting for options of replacement cars. not sure what to think at the moment. worst case I will get my money back and will demand I get back any finance payments as well..

So is the gearbox every 20k or 40k? Apparently it does not flag on the service indicator?

Mine flagged as needing a service, at 18k. When I checked with Audi they stated it would also need a gearbox oil service so just got it done.

Guessing on the back of that it's every 20k

Just hijacking this older thread as I seem to have a gearbox issue!

When the car changes from 2nd to 1st at slow speed the car jerks forward as if being rear-ended. I've noticed that there is also a whine from the gearbox that seems to be getting louder. The car also does something strange in 5th - when coasting in 5th the car feels like the brakes are being applied and then all of a sudden it feels like the car can coast more freely.

The car also feels sluggish as well and is picking up higher gears much later than usual. I initially thought it was due to a caliper that appeared to be binding but that may well not be the case.

I had the gearbox oil replaced recently at 20K miles along with all of the diffs in the transmission. Audi were trying to tell me that the box didn't need doing until 38K miles however I had to insist it was done> I was hoping that it would improve the issues but so far it's getting worse! The car is in with Audi next monday.

Has anybody else had any similar issues with the gearbox?

2nd to 1st should be smooth, almost unnoticeable.Mine is a little lumpy 1st to 2nd at low speed but put that down to what it is designed for!

Any updates? Curious to hear what has been uncovered.

On the basis that the dealer is clearly inept, I'd get all my money back and move on. Getting another car from them is clearly only opening yourself up to more issues down the line if their approach is as lazy as you detail. What's the latest for you?
