RS6's seem to be a chip magnet, dreading the day I get my first one!

I won't wrap it though, I hate the look and the cost is so high I can't help but feel you could get the front end sprayed for the same price if it gets peppered?

That's my view. It's a car, not a cock. It's for driving not sticking in a condom. It doesn't prevent chips and has its issues with peeling and discolouration. You get dirt gathering under the edges which is then going to defeat the object.

Short term I understand why some folk do it, equally if they are doing a lot of track work. But it's not a fix and I prefer to see the paint not paint under clingfilm.

And you'd rather drive around with a load of stone chips for 2 years while waiting for a respray? And then find the paint doesn't quite match? Or wrap it for a lot less! I just had the front end of my Rs4 resprayed and I wished I had it wrapped rather than repsrayed.

And I knew doodle wouls say that but modern well applied films dont discolour or peel. Times have moved on doodle.

I read plenty before taking delivery of my TTS. Plenty disagree with you. So that's the view I took. Have a surf on PH, various threads on there and numerous folk had dirt gathering. You can't avoid that, on a black car you won't see it as mich. There's also a couple of horrid episodes when removing the film.

Don't drive so close to the bloke in front is my approach!

A boulder hit me this morning that did this. Paintwork still ok though. Wasn't driving close to van in front but overtaking a lorry on the motorway.

Mike,

I also had the same thing happen to me 1 week into ownership... I left it there until I sold the car 18 months later.

When you do get the windscreen replaced make sure it's an Audi OEM screen rather than a generic one as it can effect the sensor top middle of the windscreen. I took my car to Audi, paid upfront for the replacement and then claimed it back through insurance.

Thanks Lewy. Yes the whole recalibration kerfuffle is one of my main frustrations with the chipped windscreen. And I always insist on an Audi branded screen.

Have to agree with MikeFish, this is my second car to have film applied and it's well worth the money over a respray ever couple of years.

Can't have it applied for about a month if a new car or resprayed and paint should be corrected before applying. Horror stories invariably are on the basis the afore mentioned hasn't been adhered to or dodgy respray'.

On a car the size of the RS6 it's well worth it. Considerations though, there is huge discrepancy between installer costs. Had bonnet, wings, bumper, grille, intakes, splitter wing mirrors and rear boot strip done in Suntek by cost was £1200.

Second, wish I had gotten 3M ventureshield on the bonnet as whilst Suntek is optically better it is not lasting as well as what the 3M did on previous cars, film has some stone chip tears in it. That said it hasn't damaged the paint underneath which is pristine.

As for dirt in the seams / edges, this is almost non existent with GTechniq CS Black application on top.

I use the paint protection film on my other cars. A combination of the 3M in some places and another type I cannot remember. The 3M is best on the vertical surfaces that get hit hardest and the other is less visible so it goes on the other surfaces that may get a slight angled whack.

It has saved the paint in many cases as the front of the car is vulnerable. You do have to be careful where feet and baggage can touch it as this can leave scuff marks but for the front of the car it is great.

Tried wrapping mine in cellophane. Couldn't get in the damn doors then made a helluva racket when driving what with it flapping in the wind. Melted in some places. I could tell people were looking in admiration at the car though. Still looked great.

This forum has been great for information and some very experienced people giving up their knowledge and experiences, some of which shown on this thread. Thanks for sharing OP. I am keen to get my whole car wrapped, whether it be a different colour or similar to what the OP has got done I am undecided yet. Concerns over how 3M total wrap will effect warranty as dealer suggested it could be classed as a modification?
Definitely need to do something to protect against chips. Whilst giving the car a good clean the other day it became apparent there were a few minute little chips which at the moment are superficial and not normally noticeable under normal viewing. I'm sure you can sympathise with my head in arms groan at their discovery. The wife looking jealously on wondering what it's like to be given such attention and care!!! haha.

If it's a clear film there should be no issues, technically if you colour change you have to notify the DVLA. Is your dealer insinuating they'd void the paint warranty for having a film applied? Never heard of that, my local franchise suggest it for something better than Lifeshine
