TBF, i am a Porsche fan boy. Had about 6 different 911s and the PDK has only been good in its last iteration. Nevertheless, it still lacks character. I contrast, i've found the gearbox suits the RS6 perfectly.

New Panamera lacks character? I'd disagree and I've been an Audi RS fan boy for the best part of ten years.

Only sampled PDK in 991/Macan/Panamera. Only 997s I've driven were manwell.

Sorry, not driven new Panamera. I found PDK on my 991 GT3 too boring and clinical in the way it worked. Ironically the PSE on my C4S makes downshifts more entertaining than the GT3, but i never sit back and think "Woah, what a gearbox". I found my old SMG M3 CSL more 'involving' and characterful whilst getting the job done, yet people moan about it.

I suppose it's what the definition of 'better' really is.

THe box on my 2011 Panny Turbo was awful compared with the RS6 one!

Half decent in sport plus but sometimes painfully slow changes....and not at all intuitive.

The new one is rapid. In sport plus you get a thump when changing gear. It a big old beast, at least as big as the RS6, but it rode better, handled better and went well, in 4S guise.

I'm sure it's very decent but it's also £130k+ with the right options and it's not like you're going to get the discount you'd get on an RS6.

But then equally is less likely to depreciate like an RS6 whilst your Audi stealer repeatedly kicks you in the balls.

The number of reports of steering wheel vibration are a little worrying and kind of makes me wonder what the hell is going on at Audi. The reason I sold my RS4 (B7) was because after 7 visits to the dealer replacing pretty much everything from discs, hubs, wheels, and even many DRC suspension components, the dealer could not fix a damn annoying vibration between 40-50mph. A similar issue happened in my B8 S4 which wasn't as bad and I eventually got sorted with really careful wheel balancing.

Are Audi stock wheels just utter <beep> and prone to bending on our crap roads? Why is this? How do other manufacturers not have this issue as much. I've had a fair number of cars and none of the non-audi variety had these issues.

Am a bit miffed now as I just bought a brand new set of standard 21'' graphite RS6 wheels from Felmondo. Should probably have bought aftermarket wheels reading some of this.

Re: Panameras. The old model (mine was a 2011) had a very sluggish PDK even in sport plus mode. The RS6 box is light years ahead in terms of responsiveness and speed of up and downshifts. I also hate the artificial "aggressiveness" that Porsche put into their sports plus settings. I don't particularly need the car thumping me up the arse when I upshift. The 2011 Panamera Turbo had this and the 911 C4S (991) had this too. Agree on the 911 C4S sports exhaust. Epic sound as standard. Only car I've ever driven where I literally had no desire to put on an aftermarket exhaust.

The new Panamera does look good and the Hybrid Turbo S will be impressive but as far as I know you only get 2 seats in the back still and a rubbish boot so it is useless for me. The Panamera Sport Turismo (estate version) coming out in 2017 might be tempting if the space matches other estates in the sector but it will be £130/140k+ for a well-specced one. A possible prospect in 2-3 years when their value is halved.

Alex

Can't agree more about the Panny Turbo box.

Mine was exactly the same.....made a fast car feel well ?...slow!!

New one does look good mind....Porsche say the 4.0 TT is not related at all to the RS6 unit?...yeah right must have same parts etc?...if so be very tuneable but it's whether the PDK can handle the torque?
