Afternoon all,

just a little heads up. If you are an amazon prime customer, Shell Helix Ultra 5w30 is £18.74 for 5ltrs at the moment.
It's all torque talk.

Interesting thread - does anyone know the Vw code we need to look for. The oil on Amazon prime isn't 504 which I thought was the one we needed?

It depends on what service scheme you decide to run for your car.

VW 504.00 compliant oil is required for cars on the long life/flexible service scheme. If on the anual service, then VW 502.00 is compliant. There is no specific weight suggested, so either 5w-30 or 0w-30 is fine.

If it is the Shell oil you want to use, the I believe it is Shell Helix Ultra Extra that you need, it's 5/30 and VW 504 507 (which is the specification Audi use for both petrol and diesel).
I personally would just use the Audi recommended 504.00 507.00 5/30 Castrol oil - you have spent £?????? on your pride and joy, so why skimp trying to save on a few pounds? Then there's also no arguement if engine problems occur that could remotely be related to the type of engine oil used.

The Audi oil is 0w-30 helix avl not castrol now.

It makes no sense to use a same spec 5w over a 0w in the UK. Especially on a big v8.

Pish, you certainly wont ever get close to touching lower the cold temperature rating of the 5W in the UK, never mind the 0W.

It's not about the maximum tolerances of each. At 10.c a 5w-30 is nearly twice as thick as a 0w-30. That would mean it's about 14x thicker at 10.c than it's ideal viscosity at 100.c

Wrong.

The first number is the cold rating, the second the 100degC rating.

A 30 is a 30, regardless of the first cold temp number.

The 0W is rated way colder than you'll see in the UK unless you happen to live at the top of Ben Nevis perhaps.

I'm not wrong at all. You confirmed what i said. A 5w and 0w are the same at 100 where the engine operates but a 5w is thicker than a 0w at everything below that. At say 10 degrees, which is a temp we get in the uk, it is twice as thick, at 30 degrees it is over 50% thicker. They are all thicker than ideal below 100 but a 0w is not as bad as a 5w.

This is why VW invested a <beep> tonne of money with Shell to develop a 504 complaint 0w-30 and it is why they fill all their cars up with it.

Got any sources to verify that fact, as I do find it hard to believe. B7 RS4's have been running 5w30 for donkeys with no ill effect.
