Yes the TTRS and RS3 both stolen from same household on the same night in Kent.
So, who's looking at getting trackers fitted?

Re: Another one gone? Stay safe guys.
I'm definitely looking at it, but will get it done outside the dealer network to hopefully avoid the 4 common spots which defeat the entire purpose of hiding the tracker. Not sure what model/level I'll go for though, there's quite a jump in price at the top.APA_telford wrote:Yes the TTRS and RS3 both stolen from same household on the same night in Kent.

Re: Another one gone? Stay safe guys.
I don't think these type of scum care if a tracker is fitted or not....most of them know they will definitely have tracker and know how and where to disable them anyway.
There must be a technology available now that disables car even when stolen with keys?
It's the though of being stalked and watched by these scumbags and then the thought of them inside your home, or as in Eddies case waiting with a weapon for you!!!
I fee going forward if something isn't done we are going to see crazy insurance quotes for RS,s etc in times to come?...like the cossie days of the late 80,s early 90,s.

Re: Another one gone? Stay safe guys.
A hidden "killswitch" for the battery would work long enough to delay someone trying to take it from your drive, especially if you use a separate alarm which would also be going off (there was thread here about using a house PIR alarm which looked do-able).
Of course they could decide to get physical or just grab you whilst driving like Eddie555 so nothings 100% certain but the vast majority seem to be taken from the drive, usually by stealing the keys from the house in which case get a better house alarm, dog, baseball bat etc.
***EDIT*** - I'm sure there was a little "black box" for your car in the mid 90's which let you start the engine but would cut all power 1 minute later unless you pressed a hidden button (I looked at it for my R34). I've no idea who/what/how made it but it'd be something fairly simple to rig if you're a car electrician (timed relay to remove the ignition signal). The idea being that the scum would drive off and when the engine cuts out they'd be too far away to come back to get you.

Re: Another one gone? Stay safe guys.
Very easy to put a hidden kill switch in the boot. I had one in my Cosworth in the bad old days.
Re: Another one gone? Stay safe guys.
I am fairly sure its illegal for a device to be able to kill the engine dead when the car is in motion. But I cannot fathom why the ECU couldn't be instructed by the tracker to limit vehicle speed in gradual increments to slowly bring the car to a halt or something like that. Trouble is, I expect the thieves have stashed the car and found the tracker before many owners realise the car has even been taken.

You mean a device like say, the car keywildbore wrote:I am fairly sure its illegal for a device to be able to kill the engine dead when the car is in motion.

Like I said, I can't remember much about it so that may not have been exactly how it worked but the gist that I remember was a settable delay and then the engine would cut.
Infact with todays electronic handbrake I wonder if a "lock" could be put on the handbrake so it couldn't be released???

Re: Another one gone? Stay safe guys.
The Clifford Blackjax requires you to enter a secret code using a rocker switch otherwise the engine cuts out a few minutes after starting the car when it slows down /stops.IanH755 wrote:You mean a device like say, the car keywildbore wrote:I am fairly sure its illegal for a device to be able to kill the engine dead when the car is in motion.

If things don't improve, some may have to go back to the old style crook lock soon

Im afriad the crook lock is pointless if they have the car keys (and therefore crook lock key).APA_telford wrote:Haha. I had a hidden kill switch on my old RS turbo too.Markp wrote:Very easy to put a hidden kill switch in the boot. I had one in my Cosworth in the bad old days.

Re: Another one gone? Stay safe guys.
I've got a modern steering wheel lock.....not the be all and end all of vehicle security, BUT better than the ones in the early 90,s and is a visible deterrent and would be a right <beep> about to get off....I work on the assumption these scum bags don't want to be spending valuable minutes trying to get your car?...they want keys in and drive away?
I also have a drop down bollard
And I know it's a chew BUT the keys for these aren't on my bunch of car keys....on a separate bunch I keep away from car keys on a night.
I work on the assumption IF they find my car keys they get them and be gone....then realising they haven't got keys for steering wheel lock and bollard....so they'll just leave it at that and go?....if they find both sets I'm fucked!!! But hey ho I've tried.
Of course we don't live in an ideal word but I want to try my best not to be done over my these pond feeders.

Re: Another one gone? Stay safe guys.
When BMW's first started going walkies via the OBD port in 2011 I dug out my old Disklok and have used it since on all my cars. The key for it is always kept separate to the main car key. Yea it's a bit of a PITA to use sometimes but an extra deterrent is an extra deterrent.MikeFish wrote:Im afriad the crook lock is pointless if they have the car keys (and therefore crook lock key).APA_telford wrote:Haha. Possibly, but given Eddie's experience it doesn't appear much will deter. I think I'd prefer to avoid the violence.
