I've just had a quick peek, they plug into the back of the matrix on 3,5mm jacks..you're right, geniuses!

So is there a socket on the back of the sky box that takes a jack so I can do away with the infa red things?

Ish. Sky box will take IR over the RF feed on RF2. You'll need to buy a small adapter that plugs into RF2 and has a 3.5mm socket for the IR feed. I thought you needed to enable the IR feed for RF2 in setup but I can't find it. Might be in the installer menu (Google for details on access).
