I had to put this back a weekend, as Audi didn't get the oil in for 4 days!
So i think I took longer trying to get the car level than anything else but it generally went well. The fluid that came out looked just like the fluid going in. I measured 4.2l after draining it for 8 hours - I drained it hot and left the car to cool. The filter looked quite dirty but not too bad.
After scraping all the bits of old gasket and some kind of sealant off the pan and gearbox, it all went back together again easy enough. Due to a missing 17mm hex tool I did all this before removing the fill plug. It took 2 broken tools but eventually came off with a fair bit of persuasion!
It's hard to say how much oil went back in. I used 4.8l but I'd say 1-200ml ended up spilling out during the process. It took another 1-1.5l after the initial 'fill', when the fluid was up to temp and circulated by putting it in drive.
The result? I very smooth gearbox! I am still getting a bit of slip on WOT in 1st/2nd after a good test drive but even then it's transferring most of the torque. And there's no slamming into gear at all. I'm very pleased, it's not actually felt this good since I bought it. For a hard evening and £150 all-in this was definitely worth while.
There was alot of oil in the undertray - it looks like transmission fluid - this would explain why it's gotten worse recently, and was a bit low. It appears to be leaking in 2 places, there are two pipes leading into a cooler on the passenger side just behind the bumper once the undertray is removed. It looks like the pipes are leaking from either the crimps or unions to the cooler. They connect to hardlines that go back under the subframe, I was only aware of the engine oil cooler lines that were recently replaced - is this indeed oil lines from the gearbox?
