Anyone left?

Post by GerrardS » Thu Aug 06, 2020 3:50 pm

Last post in this sub-forum was almost 10 months ago...

I bought my first Audi around then, a 2007 S6. I wanted another TVR Chimaera but that just wasn't practical. I still wanted that big V burble, always preferred the look of an estate over a saloon and wanted 4WD, so I decided on an Audi S6 Avant, settling for the V10 because I had a budget of £10k (that also precluded me from considering the C6 RS6). There weren't that many for sale when I was looking and none of them sounded the way I imagined they should. Until I found one with a Milltek exhaust... It was located a few hours drive away so the guy sent me videos of it starting up, and screaming past, and I remembered why I loved big V engines. When I went to view it I knew before I got there that I was going to leave with it unless it was a proper shed. But the guy was an automotive engineer, as was the bloke he'd bought it off and they had maintained it to a high standard. So we all lived happily ever after!
Last week I was looking through the raft of paperwork that came with it and found the original invoice from AMD for the Milltek and a remap. It didn't state whether it was resonated or non-res (just a list of parts along with the prices) so I called them today to find out - very helpful gentleman looked up the invoice number and told me it was a non-res. Good to know!

Anyway, "Hello!" and here's a photo...

Nice to know there is still someone about. I bought mine about 2 months ago. It’s a little rough around the edge cosmetic wise (all 4 wheels need refurb and there are a few small dents and scratches around the rear), and I have a small oil leak from I think the oil cooler seals (not took it apart yet to check) and it’s lots of miles 150k but it still feels strong with no misfires or anything. I would love to get the exhaust as it’s just a bit quiet (apart from on cold starts) but it’s comfortable, loads of space and since it only cost me £6.5k I don’t think I’m going to lose too much on it if I keep it for a year or so - assuming nothing catastrophic happens of course.

And I love my cream interior

...and I’m slowly working through refurbish the worm bolsters and cracks on the front seats. Here’s the before

Here’s the after (although I have yet to go over with the die and conditioner at this point) so I think I can get it better yet.

I sold mine a few years back, but do quite miss the noise.

i had a non-res milltek on it, and it was just fantastic!

Wow, that's a huge difference, what have you used? Mine has the black interior, so the creases are not quite as evident. And "only" 91k on the clock, so barely run in...
I managed to knock the guy down when I bought it, so used the remaining cash from my budget to get the body work fettled and alloys refurb'd. There are a few jobs that I want to get done, but only one issue that would have prevented it passing the MOT - one of the exhaust flex-pipes was leaking. The VAG specialist garage who serviced it said it would probably cost around £1400 for them to replace the pipe, but suggested I go see an exhaust specialist. I found a local one who welded it in place for £100. Bargain!
Biggest job left is gearbox service, ~£400 quote for that. Then there's an air leak from a breather pipe, an aircon service and deteriorated rear bump stops.
Other than that they were pretty impressed for a 13 year old car :)

I used colourlock.com. They have a liquid repair that fills and colours the cracks (very impressed with this but it doesn’t go far - the amount of cracking I had I needed 2 tubes). You then use their colour matched die to blend it all in. About as good as you can get it without getting it professionally repaired but for about £100 it’s an easy DIY. For that I did both front seats (the drivers side was the worse as you can see) and some cracks/wear lines in the back.

I can’t justify the cost of miltek for the exhaust so will probably look to get a custom one made to get a bit more noise out of it.

I was lucky my air con was working fine and just needing recharging which is what I did a couple of weeks ago. I’m so glad I did given the current heat wave.

I’m in the same boat and will need gearbox service as I don’t have record of it being done recently so it’s due. Working through the rest of cosmetic issues on the body (need some dents removed and I’ll get round to doing the paint correction) and wheels refurbed. It’s not my daily driver so can get away with it being indisposed while I work on it.

Still gives me smiles whenever I get in and start it up and then hit the road.

I still have the Sprint Blue S6, with grey leather, I bought in 2015 for £9K, when a "good one" cost £18K. I bought it from a salvage yard who said they bought it at a police auction after it had been impounded for 6 months during a robbery trial. It was a little battered and several faults. All the bodywork is tip-top after repairs following a lorry sideswiping me in Belgium and a van rear ending me 1/2 mile from home. After using optical loopback connectors to get the canbus to 'talk' and replacing the airbag ECU, both seat modules and the bluetooth module; due to them having got wet (I suspect due to a bit of off-roading by the robbers); and the 'stealership' robbing £234 to 'program' the replaced modules; I got the MMI to work. Then a BIG one, a simple faulty O2 sensor stuck in a needlessly stupid position on a cat necessitated an 'engine out' fix - watch out for that one. At the 100,000 mile mark I had Unit20 fit a resonated Milltak and service the differential and gearbox; just to be sure. I did the 'carbon clean' (inlet manifold off) myself, which wasn't quite as scary as I expected. New plugs and coils fitted at the last service and it's good for another 100,000 miles. Or will be once I have replaced the secondary air injection pump and (maybe) the valves; and fixed a wonky DRL...and broken headlamp washer connector...and replaced the discs and pads.

In looking to get beck into s ownership after what seems like many years.
I'm looking at S6. C6 as there amazing value, if initially discounted then as years ago I used to have a c6. Lemans and I thought I wouldn't look /gel much different inside. I was wrong obviously
I need a second car for myself, we also have a q7 for her. I need it for doing the occasional school run (3 kids) , going out on the evenings to surveys at customers houses and generally being in something more satisfying than my van
I know the running costs on these aren't good but it will be quite a low mileage usage.
What are the things to watch out for on the motor? Do they have carbon issues like the V8?

Yes - short answer is they have carbon buildup issues as well. Here’s a good overview for what to look out for generally.

I’m still around and still trying to keep my S6 Avant alive in spite of the lockdown and not having much opportunity to drive it. As I’m planning on keeping it for a while I want to work on a few of the jobs that’s been annoying me since I picked it.

First my rear washer wasn’t working as it wasn’t spraying out water - I stripped the rear panel off and found that the water pipe had come off at the motor. Didn’t look like I could fix it back on so I bought a new one (non genuine). Straightforward swap and now I have rear washer working. I should have taken some pictures of the work but I didn’t. Only real pain was putting the boot trim back on - nightmare trying to do that on your own. A second pair of hands helps greatly.

Next my heater blower was working intermittently. Didn’t know if it was the motor or the resistor so decided I would just replace both - again bought new non genuine. Tricky getting to the small screws to pull the motor out but in end got them although 2 of them snapped so will need to drill them out to properly secure it back again. Here it is with the old motor out.

I also decided to tackle my broken drivers door lock which doesn’t lock and unlock with the fob (front passenger also needs changed). I dismantled the door card and have access to the lock but I can’t get it out. I can’t figure out how to release it from the plastic shroud. I’ve watched YouTube clips and read in other forums but still struggling. I left it for now. I might just have to take out the window mechanism to get full access but I’m hoping to avoid it still.

I have a dreaded oil leak which I hope isn’t disastrous but next week I am taking it into a local VAG specialist to have the inlet carbon cleaned and injector cleaned and have them look at it while they have it apart. After all that I hope I can just enjoy it and work on the cosmetic stuff next instead of anything mechanical or broken. I want to get it back to its former glory so will have the wheels refurbed and some of the minor dents and scratches fixed.

Anyway, just wanted to share a small update.
