Also seen someone mention torque, my car made 1440nms on the 850’s
= 1062 lb-ft

That's an extraordinary amount of torque for any engine to generate and survive. And your gearbox builder must be really good.

My rule of thumb for the best tuned engines is:

100 Nm per litre per bar

So 1440 Nm is what I'd expect from a superb engine running two bar boost, with really good cooling and sensible ignition. I think you said you used bigger ICs and WMI?

The water must be evaporating and adding to the water vapour generated by the fuel burning, so you have more combustion products than you would otherwise. Effectively you're ingesting more fuel and air without ingesting more volume.

Normally, increasing boost gives decreasing returns, because the higher temperature requires the ignition to be retarded.

Running the marston intercoolers yes mate and aqua mist water meth kit with the biggest nozzles available. Hoping by the end of this month we will have the car done, I really wanna do vmax in it before I sell it

I should have results this week, unfortunately we had a hold up on the exhaust side of things. I’ve went full 3.5” from the turbos back, I wanted to retain some level of quiet. Opted for 5” silencers and the wrong size came, so we lost a couple of days waiting on new ones. Exhaust is now finished and the car will be back at Mrc tomorrow for a week of testing and mapping. As said TTEs rep suggests we should do 1000hp minimum especially with my spec. My car ran 880ps and 1200nms on the 850’s on a mild map and 1008ps on race fuel. I’m hoping the new turbos do 1050+ps on 99 and upwards of 1150 on race. I think the curve will move slightly to the right as it’s a bigger turbine wheel, I’m hoping we don’t lose too much spool as the 850’s were incredible in that sense. Will post all findings good and bad throughout next week 👍🏻
Now I remember - was it 1440 Nm on race fuel? You must have been peaking around 2 bar to get that.

1200 Nm on 99 sounds consistent with a really good engine running 1.45 bar.

Can't believe your gonna sell after doing all that.

1.45 bar peak boost on race fuel it was, yes selling to build a TT R8. Doesn’t bother me, someone will get an amazing c6 out of it. Plus my b5 is nearly finished, Mrs would leave me if I keep them all 😂

Sometimes you have to lose some to win some. :-(

What are you doing to your B5? I always liked that shape.

Exhaust Back Pressure

Post by welwynnick » Tue Aug 13, 2019 10:38 am

This business about exhaust gas velocity and back pressure....

I'm pretty sure now that's only relevant to naturally aspirated engines. I don't have any specific links that relate to this, but after a lot of reading around of people with proper experience of turbo tuning, there seems to be a unanimous chorus of approval about it.

With turbos there are two back pressures - upstream of the turbo (which is high back pressure, but essential to generate boost) and downstream of the turbo (which is low back pressure, and quite unrelated to scavenging etc.) There's a big pressure drop across the turbine (usually greater than the boost pressure), and even if you had a completely open exhaust, the back pressure would still be high as seen by the engine.

Downstream back pressure is buffered by the turbos and is unwanted - the lower the better. Any downstream back pressure simply adds to the upstream back pressure. Therefore large, low restriction exhausts (especially downpipes) are an unqualified benefit, as long as they do their job.

TTH 1100

Post by welwynnick » Thu Aug 15, 2019 7:18 pm

Well, this thread is called Turbos - options, and it appears that there may be another option coming up in the shape of the TTH 1100. The turbos are presumably made by Turbo Technik Hamburg, fitted by RS Engineers and tuned by THT Performance. They'll be licking their lips in Germany. Maybe they've had some good results from the prototype Wagner C6 SMICs, or it could be that it's old post that pre-empted the eventual TTH-1050 production units.

EDIT: I also found this 1000 bhp BUH turbo upgrade from Holex in Germany. Don't know much about them, but they've been around a long time and have great feedback:

I spent many happy hours reading all the dyno reports from TTE: https://www.audi-sport.net/xf/forums/th ... eply_count

Sometimes there's good information in there, about the mods done on each car, who the tuner was, boost levels, intake & exhaust specs, internal mods if any, etc.

Forgetting the V8 and V10 engines for just a moment, it's easy to gravitate to the big power models - TTRS, B5 etc, and some of those have huge specific outputs.

However, I've also been looking at the lowest achieving tuned engines, and a pattern emerged. I looked at the earlier modifications for 2.0 and 2.5 engines in particular, and ignore those that revved over 7000, had forged bottom ends, methanol injection, used race fuel etc. Many of them had stock intakes and exhausts as well. APR did an OFF-THE-SHELF tune for the R7 with TTE420 that made 400 bhp.

Something stuck out though - even the lowest achieving TTE-upgraded engines routinely achieved around 200 bhp/litre and 200 lb/ft/litre. In fact, the best tuned Golf R7 and RS3 examples can achieve that with STOCK turbos. In most instances the specific power is a little higher, and a handful have slightly lower specific torque.

So the latest and most extreme TTH/THT RS6's to break through 1000 bhp & 1000 lb-ft are doing nothing more than any good engine should do, given the right intake, exhaust and cooling.

I asked the question about TTH and if anyone had any experience with them and no one replied. As I found these on ebay which I thought was a great price for their 850 bhp spec versions - https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Upgrade-Turb ... 1438.l2649

We are removing the TTE1000’s off my car and returning to the 850’s. We ran the 1000’s on the dyno with the airboxes removed and wastegates shut etc. Maxed out these turbos make 1.2 bar and 850ps with 1000nms on 99oct fuel. Given that these are maxed, race fuel won’t make a difference as we can’t run any more boost. I can make more power and more torque on the 850’s. If i wasn’t selling the car I’d be interested in continuing on with development

Sorry to hear about that, we've all been waiting with baited breath.

TTE routinely produce turbos that can push 2 bar, but something's gone wrong here. I wonder what TTH do differently?

Have TTE said what they're going to do?

Are you going to put your car back to how it was?

I’ll be returning the car to the previous 1000ps spec mate yes. Might make a little more as we’ve upgraded the exhaust. With regards to TTE I’ll find out tomorrow if they have any other proposals. For me though it’s time to bow out, I really want to get started on a TT R8 project. Whoever lands my c6 is getting a special car though

With regards to TTH I have no idea what they do differently. They still run stock manifolds and I’ve yet to see a dyno with 1150ps. Highest I’ve seen is 1050 which I can do on the TTE 850’s

Have you still got the 3.5" system fitted?
