Where to sell

Post by TWG1 » Sat Jan 12, 2019 2:25 pm

I have been in two minds about selling my RS, I have had it about a year and a half and whilst its in the top two cars I have owned I need to have something with some off road ability, so whilst its been on here in the classifieds for a while with no interest. I need to market it a little more widely, I was trying to avoid auto-trader and have read about some of the other options why buy any car etc .

Any suggestions on best route or is it a case of bite the bullet and auto-trader is the way to go.

I have used Pistonheads successfully.

Keep the RS, and buy an old Landrover!

Had considered the old land-rover idea but its the miles I need to cover between me and the destination is the issue , I cant cover the ground fast enough in a 90 or 110 !

Tootle , thats the site I could not remember the name off , it's a trade version of eBay for cars ?

Basically with tootle you put your car details in then dealers contact you with an offer. Generally the offers are a bit better than normal dealers prices and meant to be pretty hassle free.

Where to sell

I’ve sold two cars through Tootle including the C7, I’d recommend. Offer will be somewhere between private and trade.

I’ve seen your add, price is optimistic. Market is depressed due to the various events and plenty of supply now with cars hitting three years plus. For comparison I sold my car two years ago, 2015 FL, Sepang, carbon, dynamic pack plus etc etc for 61.

I think you’d be looking at late 40s.

Out of curiosity, why not auto trader? Not sure there are many people who would deliberately stay away from browsing auto trader when they are buying.
Currently running:

Favourite car ever owned:

Time wasters, dreamers and no access to finance etc thus limiting market.

Unfortunately this

If using Autotrader, blank your number plate in all your pics. Autotrader lets you use a phonesafe number, and likewise with the email. Its not a failsafe, but a chat on the phone usually gives you a good impression of whether a caller is a genuine enthusiast / private buyer, or whether they fall into the 'whats your best price bruv' brigade

But surely if you are going to get tyre kickers and test pilots then you'll get them from advertising elsewhere too. I am sure Pistonheads also has muppets for members (unlike rs246 :bigblink:)

I hear what you are saying though. I usually just trade in my cars for the next ones but I did sell 3 cars in the past year on Autotrader, all very successfully and no muppets. One was a mini cooper S, which I thought may attract muppets, and one was a 911 Turbo S, which I was sure would. No muppets at all. Just genuinely interested parties. The only thing that was a bit annoying was with the Porsche I got a lot of broker calls making stupidly low offers.

Horses for courses though as I am sure others will have less positive stories about mainstream sites like Autotrader, but my approach was that I wanted the widest marketing / advertising scope possible and then to weed out the crap on the phone calls.

A couple of years back when selling my M3 i was inundated with call's at all hours a couple from up north got quite stroppy when I would not agree to their cash offer at the asking price if i dropped it off in Manchester to them as they did not want to drive down to London.

As well as the above example the brokers and traders did my head in , that said there other cars I sold went to the trade direct and those buyers were fine.

I may well bit the bullet and give it a go, part of it is I really don't want to part with it but needs must !

I am with doodlebug. I sold my 2015 f/l 6 earlier this year. If you want to shift it, I suspect you need to be prepared to take just under 50.

Right chaps, an update and an idea where the market is at the moment .

Car was sold into the trade in some way's gutted but right thing to do enjoyed the time I had with the car covered 18k in it in 18 months.

It sold for £51k to a large dealer group, interestingly another buyer from same group underwrote it at 47k ! Tootle produced bids from £42 to just under 50k car sold via auto-trader. The three strongest bids came fr0m a well know indi and two main-dealer groups .

Not one private call, possibly due to the need to finance , but I wonder how many people are aware you can still obtain it if you go direct to the finance companies in some instances.

Who knows where I go next!

Sold to Sytner?

A good price achieved, won’t be much in it for the stealer.
