No, light the f'kers up! Unless there is street lighting of course in which case the lights revert to normal dipped mode.

OK, so I'm now using this a lot, and loving them... HOWEVER, even with lights set to 'auto' on the dial to the right of the S/W, you still have to push the stalk to activate the automatic main beam element, which seems a bit counterintuitive. Why doesn't it just work alongside the regular auto lights?! :(

Is this something which can be programmed with Vagcom?

I was puzzled too, I guess it leaves the option open of not using if the system malfunctions? It's like the wireless charger constantly putting a message up to say that the cradle is charging wirelessly - were the Audi engineers amazed it worked and needed reminding I wonder?
