LED DRLs for B7

Post by fairzy » Wed Oct 10, 2018 4:17 pm

After 8 months of searching I finally found a B7 RS 4 Avant and couldn’t be happier... I will add some pics etc in due course.

In the meantime I’m looking to get rid of the yellow DRLs. I’ve read through a number of threads but couldn’t find any recent ones. There are now loads of LED bulbs listed on eBay which claim to be CANBUS compatible / error free. Just wondered if anyone has bought some recently?

I was going to give these a try unless anyone has any recommendations? They’re £12 which seems like a bargain!

I did have a look at Trups from the other threads. £65 seems a lot for a couple of bulbs - I know you get what you pay for but that still seems steep.

Ended up getting a set off eBay for £7 which are normal bulbs so won’t throw an error and are meant to illuminate white(ish).

I’ll report back if they’re any good...

I have been through a few...

Resistors get very hot and still the occasional error, others have produced radio interferance all have errored. I think auto lights makes things more difficult as the best ones only error when it is dark.

I settled on the PIAA "blue" bulbs although LEDs definitley brighter I got bored with the errors (although easily resolved by turning HLs on/off) so if have regular HLs then I think things be easier.

That’s kind of where I ended up and was actually looking for the PIAA blue bulbs but couldn’t find a stockist.

Ended up getting these

Post up photos once you have fitted them, I have gone an equally easy route in a normal filament bulb but a different colour. Will see how they look and if I’m not won over will go for white ones if they look okay.

Cheers

I bought these which are very similar to the first ones linked, but don't claim to be can-bus https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/2-SAMSUNG-38 ... :rk:2:pf:0. The light output is good, and I wired in some external resistors mounted on an aluminium plate to act as a heatsink. Still occasionally get an error when turning the ignition on but it usually clears immediately (I have auto lights).

Even if the ones you linked to do actually have resistors in the base of the lamp, they would run very hot and probably not last very long. Best to install external resistors rated to dissipate the required power. Or you could avoid lots of faffing about and just get the blue coloured filament lamps.

EDIT ok so I read the thread again properly and see you just bought the filament ones. Would like to see pics!

Went for the Trups / EM tuning ones myself. They are good. Error occasionally but not often (maybe once every 2 months), cycling off/on clears it.

Worth getting an interior kit too. Makes a huge difference to how modern it feels changing lights from yellow to white.

New bulbs have arrived so will fit them when I get a chance and post some before / after pics.

I did look at Trups option but seemed expensive for a couple of bulbs.

I replaced all with Ebay ones, and they work great, its been a month, maybe not as super bright as the expensive ones, But i dig it... the only problem was when i replaced the plates, it threw an error on the dash, so i went back to the OEM' ones, I love the look, ill post some photos later. I hated the yellow old DRL's

Just replaced mine with a LED DRL kit off eBay, £40 all in delivered to my door. 10 mins to fit looks a good quality kit and performs well, tested the resistors and they don't get that hot at all.
