My 2 years with the RS6 - Some numbers
My 2 years with the RS6 - Some numbers
Unfortunately I had to sell my RS6 because I could not sustain the running costs, I ran it for over 2 years as a daily driver and thought it would be helpful to share my experience for those looking to join the club. I was prepared for both fuel and maintenance costs, but my numbers were a little off, so here is my experience:
784 days
20'439 miles
94 tanks of fuel costing £6742.01
£10'035.98 on maintenance
£2200 on depreciation
£2861.87 on tax, mot and insurance
Giving a total of £21839.86
£27.86 per day
£1.07 per mile
Would I recommend it, definitely, just be prepared for the costs, are they worth it, definitely but you need a partner who agrees... or enough money that its irrelavant.
I absolutely loved it, hopefully I will stop thinking about the car at some point...

Sorry to hear you had to part with your RS. Thank you for sharing those numbers, very interesting.
Did you carry out any of the maintenance yourself, or mostly at a garage?

Re: My 2 years with the RS6 - Some numbers
Your a brave man running one as a daily, mine only comes out on a sunny dry Sunday and still costs me too much.
Re: My 2 years with the RS6 - Some numbers
I ran mine as a daily for the first 3 months I owned it while I was in the process of moving house. While I was aware it would be expensive once you put all the bills together it is a real eye opener.
I know it is too late now but was there no way of keeping the RS6 as weekend car and getting a cheap daily?
Your insurance must have been quite high then. If the tax is 315 a year plus 2 MOTs thats just over a 1k a year for insurance!

Fair play for posting this,
It's the £27.86 per day that made me wince, it's not like it was a snotter either I remember seeing it at AITP8 it was a well loved car.

2 years depreciation on a recent Range Rover would probably be more than all your expenses combined.

Re: My 2 years with the RS6 - Some numbers
I recently put this together for a friend who was interested in mine (before the scam!!)
Basic costs (based on my 20K miles/year):
• Petrol – runs 20MPG - £6K
• Insurance – being modified it is expensive – talk to A-Plan in Newbury or Adrian Flux – cost me about £950/year
• Tax – at least it’s old enough to be about £300/year
• MOT – in place to Feb 19 – never been a problem except for worn tyre one time.
• Tyres – each set lasts me about a year (ie 20K miles) – you need good tyres (Michelin PS4S are best) – allow £1000 a set.
• Brakes – depends on your driving style (car weighs 2 Tonnes) - £300 for a set of pads (50% worn 6K miles ago), £800 for a set of front discs (currently fairly new). Rears have been done recently and last for ages.
• Servicing – every 10K miles, and I budget £1250/service at MRC Tuning, Banbury, which includes fluids, plugs (every 20K miles), and a gearbox service every 20K miles. That figure allows for the fact that there are always odd things that need doing!
• The Cam belt needs changing every 50K miles (Audi recommendation was originally 40K, and then was upped to 60K so I work on 50K!) – typically about £2K as there are several bits changed at the same time.
Overall I think the car costs me £4.5-5K/year (plus £6k for fuel) to run for 20K miles – ie say 55p/mile all in
Happy days!

Re: My 2 years with the RS6 - Some numbers
Sadly the car is in the real middle ground of needing an owner who can afford to run it. But most people who can afford to run it can afford newer cars and typically do that. It is only a few of us enthusiasts who can afford to run it and prefer it to a new diesel A6.
Re: My 2 years with the RS6 - Some numbers
Spend 30k on a rs, or diesel and the difference in residuals does help. I went for the b8 rs4 hoping the reliability (less turbos and 3rd gen n/a v8) will not add to the costs. I limit the miles I do in it to 10k, and use the wife’s car for family stuff at the weekend. So far 45p/mile including major service.

MeTsU - Mostly parts with my labour, only MRC worked on the car twice, once to fit CATS and remap and once for wheel alignment - so both specialist tasks. Everything else I did, the last big job was replacing the ABS harness, which was around 20 hours labour - that job alone would cost a fortune.
Ben_r1 - Yes that was most of my problem really just putting too many miles on it / too much need to get everything done right as it needed it. I did plan on getting a 2nd car which once purchased would pay for itself, but ironically didn't get the spare cash to buy it due to the bills on the RS6.
vagmachine - It was £844 with remap, exhaust, intercoolers and suspension declared. So not so bad I don't think- that cost is a bit higher due to the 3rd year cancelation.
For info the car before the RS6 was a Renault Zoe and the replacement due in July is a Nissan Leaf. So both very cheap to run and both brand new so very little 'risk'. Oh well, in 2 years I will get another go, likely to be a Lotus Exige.

Ah yeah that would make sense. Didn't figure in the extra 50 days like a plonker. Don't know your NCB's or age but that is actually not bad!
Always liked the look of those things, that would be fun for sure!
I am tempted to put together all the money that has been spent in my year of ownership but I think I would end up in a corner in the foetal position crying.

Sorry to hear you decided to sell up and I enjoyed meeting you at the last 2 AITP's. I always thought you were brave for running it as a daily as I only pu 2-4k on mine per annum. I bet you enjoyed ownership though and you can tick it off the bucket list.
