Driving course

Post by stevo55 » Thu Feb 08, 2018 7:03 pm

Thinking of enrolling in a fast driving course for myself and the other half, basically some advanced skills involving handling, fast cornering etc. Any recommendations at all? Prefer South East area.

Yonks ago I did a course called Ride Drive - present from the Mrs. They have a list of instructors around the country - mine was an ex-policeman. He took me to some decent driving roads in the morning doing fast road driving (Including a lot of time on the wrong side of the road where it improves visibility and doing safe overtakes), then we went to bruntiingthorpe for some car control stuff and laps. The idea was to finish off with some motorway driving - but my clutch detonated! Going from 5th to 6th on the straight, the pedal Just stayed on the floor. Had to leave the car outside a garage up there and Train it back to south London. £900 for a new clutch as the casing had broken.

The course itself was £300ish from memory and I got a certificate at the end of it which entitled me to a discount at Adrian Flux - so the course paid for itself over a couple of years (not including the clutch!)

Apart from the breakdown and train ride home, it was an enjoyable day.

I really should’ve checked the website before writing all that out.

Bugger.

The problem with any of these courses held on public roads is the speed restrictions. So many great bits of road in the south now have 50 limits which on a course the instructor would have to adhere to.

I’d say any course that has ex Police Class 1 Driver’s on is going to be a good one. Course I did yonks ago was based on Systems of Car Control and I learned a ton on that.

There's an ex-Police driver near me who does some driving training though I don't know details of what exactly; I'll enquire via friends of mine who know him well.
(South Bucks but not far from Herts)

Edit: Easier to find than I thought, but may not be what you want... http://www.andrewleonard.co.uk/

Probably not what I’d be looking for (especially for the missus), the courses I’ve done have all been along those lines though with defensive and offensive driving. Cheers for the link though!

Obviously I don’t know your wife but for the average driver just looking way ahead rather than just the car in front is more than enough to drive safely on public roads👍
