DIY B14's

Post by Jon_J » Mon Jun 26, 2017 12:23 pm

Just trying to get a feel for it, can the DRC be removed and b14's fitted on the driveway? Anyone had a go?

DIY B14's

Post by pule333 » Mon Jun 26, 2017 2:28 pm

Yes it's straight forward. Car don't need to be on ramps. Image

Main problems are:
Pinch bolt on top front arms. (Of it never been out, be prepared to snap it)
Rear spring. (need spring compressor, royal PITA to remove)
Time. (I did mine in about 6-7 hour. +2h adjusting and I am no stranger with tools.)
DRC lines at rear. (I cut mine in to smaller pieces and just brute forced it) if you wanna keep them, subframe and fuel tank needs to be dropped)

Still, sounds like a challenge, I like a challenge. And time is something I have at the moment.

I'll have a look to see the difference between parts and having them fitted.

Well it will be :) but nothing you won't be able to overcome. Just don't rush! Luckily you have 16h of daylight ;) I did mine when it was dark at 7 ;)

Indeed I've just done mine , it can be done but a lot of messing around . No need to remove the top pinch bolt as you just pull the shock towards the arch and undo the arms . I removed all the under trays so I could remove the DRC lines , obviously in a garage up on a ramp is easier than being on you're knees on a garage floor !

I've had a headache with stopping this horrible knocking noise OSF over small bumps .it's a shame that bilstein didn't design their springs to sit in the top mounts like OEM as it took them 3 days to advise me you have to cut them along with there instructions that clearly state helper spring at the top when in fact you put it at the bottom as it's tiny compared to the main spring and it would never sit in the rubber mount correctly . So from reading many posts through Google there is a few owners with the same problem and most suggest new drop links which mine are or new front roll bar bushes , I just need to remove the under tray to measure the bar as there is 3 different sizes on the powerflex website

Also when refitting the top arms put the bolts back in the reverse order Audi did , this makes it really easy to change top arms etc as when removing the bolt the strut tower isn't in the way .also get new rear tops mounts , they are £30 and worth changing while the shocks are off .

Would I do it again ? Yeah sure it's a straight forward job but as I've commented above the springs don't sit true inside the mount I took the car to MRR Racing who said the same ,and southend Audi who said it's all fitted correctly and looks fine . This is the trouble I'm having eliminating the knock knock over SMALL bumps in the road from OSF only .

small knocks seem to be an issue with the b14,i want to upgrade the cheapie jap coilovers on mine to something that gives a little more height..the sub £200 coilovers on mine dont knock etc and dont kick the car all over the road...but are just too low, there are folk who dont get issues with b14 too,but searching reveals lots with knocking at the front-poor design isnt something i would expect for a product "knocking" on a grand

It's to do with the collar on the strut which sits below the strut top and the coilover spring not sitting in the OEM mount correctly .
