My old/current filter doesn't feel oiled (and doesn't look like it's ever been). I've cleaned it once (soapy water bath etc) since having it and didn't oil it then. There was some discussion that it was particles of the filter itself coming off from the inside layer of the filter causing issues as well as the oily issue too. I think as I say the new filter is going to cure those bothadsgreen wrote:Wasn't the old maf oiled and this was becoming detached and clogging the maf. Given that the maf is just a heated wire with a known temperature that simply measures how much it's cooled by to give the mass of the air, then it's going to be incredibly sensitive to oil type residue.

if its an oiled filter and its not oiled then there will be some particles that will get through whick are probably killing your mafs , the new one has an additional layer to filtr out what the oiled one would catch.
yeah maf angle will be fine then.

You're caught between a rock and a hard place with the old filter then - can't oil it because oil kills the maf's, so particles get through, which kill the maf...
Anyway - I'm off out into the garage to change filters - I'll get some photos

Standard airbox versus aftermarket
Okay. Old style filter:
The inner foam still bothers me a lot - looks really fine and when rubbed flakes away.
New filter:
Interior foam is smooth. Also appears to be three layers/types of foam instead of the older filter which looks to have just to layers.
Interior in my intake was dusty as I feared. Cleaned up as best I can and new filter fitted.
Edit: tapatalk appears to have muddled up the photo order - I'll fix it when at my laptop next. Easy enough to figure out which is new/old
