Idle problem

Post by davs4 » Fri Jan 21, 2005 11:55 pm

Help, Car started today and idle went erratic, revs fluctuating and engine hunting! Is this a MAF failure symptom? Don't have a VAG-COM
Cheers

Sound like throttle body. Get an alignment done by someone with VAG-COM.

Ok, Thanks will try VAG-COM.Do you know if the plug change I did could cause this?

Well, if you changed the plugs and it started doing it straight after then it's a good bet that it's related.
Don't want to sound patronising but did you put it all back together properly (i.e. you didn't have one
of those ephipanies where you have some 'pieces left over'). Things to check here are:

plugs correct type.
Correct coil on each plug and fitted properly.
Sensor wiring reconnected properly - I assume you removed the airbox and MAF. Hunting could be dodgy
MAF input.

Did it give you are warning? (i.e. big, red, flashing ((!)) )

As a first step I would recommend seeing if there are any fault codes.

No bits left over!! all replaced securely and correct VAG plugs used, problem started 2 weeks after fitment . I suspected MAF could be the cause owing to the inherent failure of these items, will check input plug-to be sure.
BTW Dave didn't fill with Optimax recently as they had run out,so had to use 95 Ron I will try and use then re-fill with Optimax
Thanks

I'm in Aylesbury during the week and have Vag Com. Ping me a PM if you want to meet up. Unplug the MAF see if this cures it, I suspect not.

Dave - sorry we could not fix your car....here is the detail of the fault code:

Address 01 -------------------------------------------------------
Controller: 8D0 907 551 C
Component: 2.7l V6/5VT 01 0002
Coding: 05611
Shop #: WSC 00696
1 Fault Found:
16486 - Mass Air Flow Sensor (G70): Signal too Low
P0102 - 35-10 - - - Intermittent
Readiness: 0000 0000

ALL - any idea why when we cleared engine fault codes (4 or 5 of them) the car went into limp mode and appeared to have a misfire? Also on idle, Dave's timing was around 20deg BTDC....my car was showing approx 7 deg BTDC and was running well.

Dave - pleased to hear you got home....have no idea how the car ran though. My car would not run past about 2k revs if the MAF was not connected.....

Easy fix though.... :D :D
