oil Consumption?
oil Consumption?
Hi there.
I just wondered how much oil on average people used on their cars, I have done over 3 thousand miles on my car since I have owned it, and topped up about 1.5 litres,
does that sound ok?
thanks:)

oil Consumption?
My car has now done 55k. I had my oil changed approximately 4k miles ago and checking the dipstick the level hasn't noticably changed and not needed topping up. I'm mainly doing short journeys (7 miles)to work but do manage to get the revs up most days once the cars warmed up.

Re: oil Consumption?
With regards to Oil consuption .... i think 1l per 5K miles is recommeded by Audi as about normal .... its seems some use more .... some less ..... and the older the Oil the higher its rate of consumption. Mine hasn't used any since I had it changed 5K ago.
If it's been over 1 year/10k miles since your last service i'd book it in for a oil/filter change (supply you own oil of course!) and monitor consumption after that.

Re: oil Consumption?
mine uses <1 liter between 7500 mile oil changes, maybe 3/4 or so
Audi spec is 1 liter per 600 miles iirc

Re: oil Consumption?
Oil consumption is dependant on many factors... Oil age and type, driving style, usage...
In general, most cars on 10w30 oil shouldn't use much in the first 5000 miles. Then as the polymers break down the viscosity will drop so oil usage will slowly increase. Something like 0.5-1 litre in 5000-75000 bracket and by 10000 miles it can be using 1 litre in 1k-2k miles.
Worth pointing out that the larger the difference in cold and hot numbers the more fragile the oil is to polymer breakdown. It's one reason why 10w30 lasts longer tha10w40 and is us in variable servicing (there are other factors too).
My own personal rule of thumb is that you want some oil usage but obviously the Audi spec of 1 litre in 600 miles is a bit heavy even for my taste!

How old is the oil?OskiRs4 wrote:Hi there.

10w40?
Are they the recommended grades for the RS4? or is it a typo (0w30 & 0w40)
Re: oil Consumption?
Ah yes, typo - other car runs 10w40.BlingBling wrote:10w30?adsgreen wrote:Oil consumption is dependant on many factors... Oil age and type, driving style, usage...

it's actually 5w30 "long life oil" and one of that I can't remember 10w40 or 0w40. I suspect 10 but can'tbe sure.
oil Consumption?
I'm at 5000miles since last service and not used any. Only had the car since June so can't say how it was before.
Mistakingly put just under half a litre in when I read the level on a very slight slope so i'd recommend doing it on a completely level surface. Had to extract it again so it wasn't above the max. Also idling for a minute before turning off seems to provide consistent results as well.

Re: oil Consumption?
I use 1 L per 1000 miles of spirited driving so Audi are right in that respect - and if your driving in this car is not spirited then, surely, you might want to buy something else?

Re: oil Consumption?
You can expect your oil consumption to start increasing between now and the next service.jonnyp wrote:I'm at 5000miles since last service and not used any.
My oil consumption is about zero up to 5k miles after a service and then gradually starts to increase as the oil deteriorates - which is why some people on here suggest changing oil every 5k miles.

But what age is the oil?TimDogg wrote:I use 1 L per 1000 miles of spirited driving so Audi are right in that respect - and if your driving in this car is not spirited then, surely, you might want to buy something else?
I don't care if you track it for 1000 miles - on fresh oil you are not likely to use a 1litre.
There are so many more factors than just spirited driving.
