I'm the new owner of a 53 RS6 and can't stop grinning

I'd had my previous car for 21 years and while I don't expect to keep the RS6 for anywhere near that long I'm in love with the perfomance, but not so chuffed with the state it was sold to me :(

I've had it 3 weeks now and:
  • Had new vacuum hoses (ECU warning after a day or so)
    Needs new brakes and disks all around
    Needs replacement secondary air pump
Don't get me wrong, I'm expecting to shell out on a 104k mile car, and in my most optimistic moods I think it's an opportunity to put some good disks and pads all around to tame the beast.

My question, eventually ;-), is should I shell out on OEM disks and pads or are there better alternatives?

Hi and welcome....from memory beleive you don't need your secondary air pump and when it fails, most people disconnect it and get it coded out as its far cheaper? Speak to Doug at MRC or Martin at Unit 20, they'll be able to confirm...

They'll also give you brakes options, some run VW phaeton discs, some factory, some upgrade to C6 set ups...the options are plentiful! Just depends how deep your pockets are!

Hi,

You don't need your secondary air pump, but I picked mine up on bay for £40. It's the same as A8. Search on here.

Problem with Pheoton disks is they don't have the same heat dissipation capability, stick with RS6 disc and pads. There are no cheap options available.

Hi, welcome to the world of RS6 - the grin you mention comes as standard with all RS6 models.

While your disc options are limited to pricey, expensive or extortionate, luckily there is a cheaper option when it comes to pads. The OEM Pagid pads are around £275 iirc, but there are many on here who are using Mintex pads which will cost you £80 for front and rear inc delivery from http://www.buypartsby.co.uk. I've just ordered some myself, they should be here in the week - heard good things about them.

The best way to view the RS6 is like you say, through the optimistic goggles. Things don't 'go wrong' on a RS6, they just politely suggest it's time for an upgrade... :D

As a newish RS6 owner I know that grin :)

I took into account all your comments (and spoke to MRC amongst others) and decided to suck it up and go for the OEM disks and pads otherwise I've been warned of squealing and heat dissipation issues with other pads -- wouldn't like the car sounding like a stuck pig now would we.

Talking of squealing/screeching I've taken your advice and decided to wait for a 2nd hand secondary air pump to arrive on flea bay ... I can find better things to spend £320+VAT+fitting on ... like a tune ;-) ... no no stop it!

You're not kidding! Going from a 20 yr old 2.2 normally aspirated engine with wishbone suspension to a saloon with the horses of the apocalypse straining under the bonnet is one hell of a leap :)

The Lotus even had a novel speed restrictor ... anything over 90 and you couldn't hear the radio/yourself think because the tops of the doors would strain outwards :D
