Potential north west/national meet location

Post by Rilla » Fri Nov 07, 2008 11:29 am

Hi all.
Firstly hi to everyone, i am a new member based in the Isle of Man, and following a suggestion in my 'new owner' thread, i would like to suggest the isle of man for a possible future north west/national meet.
We have some wonderful roads (no motorways at all), with no speed limits and nice scenery (tho i would recommend looking at the road more than the surroundings lol). As i am sure most of you are aware, top gear bring a lot of their cars over here to test and make use of the de-restricted roads.
Add to this i run a pub in douglas (about 2 miles from ferry terminal) so i can provide initial meet location with possibilty of some grub thrown in and free drinks for all (tap water :p).
Should anyone be interested and we can generate enough interest, i can see if i can get discount at any of the hotels on the island. I can also answer any questions people may have regarding traveling options or genral questions about the island.
We also have a (sort) of race track that allows 'run what you brung' style days, i also belive they will do a track day hire arrangment where by the track could be all ours for the day. I will make more enquiries and get some costing ideas to throw at you should people be interested.
One issue that might prove to be a slight sticking point is we dont have a audi dealers here, we do have a very good indi though with years of experinance in audi & porsche, so should anybody be totally stuck, there are provisions.
I would recommend a weekend long meet, as the traveling side can be a long day, 3 hours on boat + any driving time from your location. Maybe a friday night arrival/sunday night departure or something along those lines.
I look forward to hear you thoughts/comments about this.

Regards

Rilla (stuart)

Great initiative. I'd be interested in how this develops and if we can make an event of it. It's certainly different and interesting

I took my RS4 there some years ago on a business trip (needed the boot space). Fantastic place and had the oppertunity to drive around a bit, great roads if not a little bumpy as I recall. Lord knows how they get the bikes round the TT course at the speeds they do, frightened myself even on 4 wheels.

Good luck with the potential meet, I'm tempted, at least in the summer.

lol yeah you got me there martyn, 70% of the roads are bumpy as hell. BUT, i know the other 30%, and if you know where to go, they are worth the reward.
Most of the TT is bumpy as hell, and lots of speed restrictions in place, but still a rewarding drive to do i feel. The other advantage is we dont have any speed cameras up here, and the 1 hand held only comes out for TT season.

I love the place and have been over for the tt on a bike about a dozen times or so. me and the wife came over in the car at the end of june this year for five days and had a great time.we stayed on sulby straight at the pub.
The roads are a bit bumpy in places but if you pick the right time of day and get a fairly clear run over the mountain its one of the best places around to drive a fast car without having to worry about speed cameras etc
on one occasion i was following a police car at appx 90mph when the driver moved over to the left a little and waved me passed, which felt wierd but i didnt refuse.
If this develops into something serious i would be up for it, dates permitting

Strange you should say there are no Audi dealerships in the IOM.. I went on an Audi engine management course down in Nottingham in 2000 and there were only three of us on the course, and one of the other guys was from the IOM.

Has ther ever been a dealership there?

I honestly dont know mikey, I think there must have been once, but probably went bust due to replacing DRC suspension all the time lol.
I do know the mechanic at the local indy's (Taylor clarkes) was a full Audi technician, so was probably him you met, he does know his stuff, but unfortunatly, the garage he now works in dosent have every tool/diagnostic equipment on site, tho i have been re-assured that if its needed, they will ship over to fix my beasty.
Only down side for me is servicing, im a bit of a snob and will continue with AUDI servicing as it looks pretty in my service book.
