From what I've read elsewhere drivetrain/transmission losses go down (measured as a percentage of total power) as the power goes up ... e.g. a stock S4 with 265bhp could lose ~25% through the transmission - giving ~200bhp at the wheels (~65bhp loss)... but a modded S4 with 440bhp wouldn't lose 25% through the transmission as this would mean a loss of 110bhp, and apparently the drivetrain would literally melt if 110bhp was being lost through it (by friction and heat) ... it's more like an ~18% loss, giving 360bhp at the wheels ...

This kinda ties in with my car - it's got SMICs, and SMIC'd cars suffer on dyno's - Doug reckoned my 415bhp reading was too low because the car was suffering from major heat soak on the rollers, and the dyno's cooling fan/air flow wasn't that great - he reckoned it would probably be around the 430bhp mark on the "real" road.

This gives an 18.5% loss through the drivetrain on my car at it's current power level rather than a 25% loss.

It's "roughly" a constant. We lose C + (k * how much power we're outputting). so, the drivetrain will lose some constant, plus an amount that's relative to the power we're outputting. k ish likely to be a function rather than a constant, but without a bunch of points plotting wheel versus crank output, I can't really begin to guess, although C of 50 and k of 0.05 seems about reasonable, if the power is measured in BHP.

Did everyone see the new Ariel Atom with the supercharged v8 that revs to 10k, outputting 500 BHP...

Pretty much what I said then: - a fixed loss constant plus a variable that's proportionate to the total power means the absolute loss will go up, but the loss measured as a percentage of total power will go down ...

we should all do our bit for the environment and reduce drivetrain losses with 600bhp
