Hi and welcome,
i had a A6 2.7T up until this january(from sept 04) and i must say it was a very reliable well built car, mine had the tiptronic which i think is the best option on that engine in the A6. fuel consumtion is not bad either but depending on how you drive it, on long journeys expect around 35mpg. Servicing, brakes and discs are quite cheap, the only expensive one is the cam belt change where the front of the car has to be removed mine was around £600 from Audi, but go to a specialist and this will be cheaper.
I got my RS6 in jan this year and there is quite a few differences, all wheel arhes are wider, different bumpers and skirts, 19" wheels, quite alot of work involved if you plan doing the body style. Why not go for the A6 4.2? got the same body as the RS6 and a bit cheaper than the S6
