98 Mercedes SLK 230K, anybody in the know?

Hi guys
After both housemate and I got insurance quotes for a Boxter S that was almost ass much as my RS6, he gave up on those and has going in to proper Hairdresser mode. He wants me me to go and see a 98 Mercedes SLK 230K tomorrow night with him.
Does anyone on here have any experience with them? Are they god awful? Anything in the way of horror stories etc?
Any info appreciated thanks!
Nick

One main problem with merc's is Rust Rust & Rust. Wings arch's and anywhere else you can think of...
Surely Audi A4 would be a better choice?

No. But I did have this thought; if he goes away on a forum trip with some fellow Merc owners, at least he won't get anally raped in the showers. As all Merc owners will be far too old and will all be sporting fragile hip replacements, ironically, after having had a fall in the showers. On that thought, it might be worth telling him to start a slush fund for a hip replacement. In all seriousness, you should start stocking up on Worther's Originals and stuff them into every compartment in his Merc. If he accuses you of hiding Worther's Originals in his car just deny it and say that his memory must be starting to fade, to reinforce this, take every opportunity to steal his keys and park his car in exactly the same spot but facing the opposite direction.
Well, I took the long way around but I finally managed to fit in all the atypical "Merc owners are old" jokes... so errrrm, yeah, as per usual, I have nothing of worth to contribute. Other than that he'd look slightly less ghey sat in a CLK 430 but even that would still be more ghey than if he was cast in a gay porno starring Elton John, Louie Spence and Justin Bieber... with a soundtrack performed by the cast of Glee... and Tom Cruise working as the fluffer.

Thanks guys. I don't think he would be vaguely interested in an A4 convertable, all he can do is slag off my beast for the running costs, doesn;t really enjoy driving it and I don't think he would rate an Audi as reliable enough, no matter how tame/basic. With my experiences with A6's over the years I can't really blame him on the reliability bit though

.
He isn't a car nut like most of us at all, isn't interested in spending that little bit more to help get a better example if he can get "functional" for less and he doesn't give a Monkey Nut what others think, fair enough I guess and to each their own

. He is a great guy, just not flambouyant when it comes to car purchasing.
Heardy, that series SLK is touted as having a galvanized body with a 30 year (good luck with claiming on it) warranty. I knew about the other swiss cheese Mercs from the mid-late 90's era at least but are you saying that these are in fact no different?
Bam, This thread would have been shat if somebody hadn't posted a load of (highly amusing) total tosh in the name of entertainment

Hope he has deep pockets as the early ones were prone to breaking if not looked after well

He has very deep pockets as he never spends money really orwhat is needed to buy a good car and doesn't like paying proper prices for decent examples, he thinks there are always bargains to be had. He is now looking at ones around 2.5K. I give up with him....................

Who said anything about entertainment
Nothing else for it really, if he's that hellbent on getting a poxy SLK from the '90, just let him. You'll need to stock up on Worther's Originals, get a spare key cut and scatter some Alzheimer's pamphlets about the place. Maybe put down one of those rubbery suction-cup mats in the shower... well you wouldn't want him self-harming, would you?
As an aside, I'm putting money on this Merc showing up in silver, any takers?

Well, madam got rammed up the chuffer last night by something big & black (so not me then)........
Turns out that a Merc took a fancy to her backside and wanted to see he he could fit himself up there (pause). Well, he couldn't but he utterly destroyed it in the process. Her Clito is nicely folded up at the back and I have no doubt that it will be a write-off (hoorah!) so I am now going car shopping for her. She likes the sounds of a SLK but being me, I will actually spend an appropriate amount on a decent model (2000 model), if she likes them. Sadly she really likes the silver ones, might have to beat that out of her as I am sure as <beep> not a fan.....
Pretty awful fit for me as a passenger, have to sit in it hunched over quite a bit with the roof up, didn't even try the driver's side, looked painful! Also going to be looking at tidy examples of Cupra R's as she has driven one and really likes them
Bam, just the thought of those old shower mats under foot has me grimacing!

Get her this:

Haha. I love the way it says 3 owners in the text, then 2 owners a bit further down.

Also no mention of miles, so I'm guessing 100k+. Still, seems like a good price, but I know nothing about MB.

That may be debatable in the case of anyone that actually wants to own a SLK...
